SHINDE FOOTSTEPS LAUNCH

Ker & Downey Botswana is excited to launch the rebuild and rebrand of Shinde Footsteps.

Shinde Footsteps, previously known as Footsteps Camp, is an intimate camp located in the Shinde Private Concession.

Shinde Footsteps is open to all guests, not only families and walking enthusiasts. The camp has remained intimate, accommodating just six guests in a choice of twin, double or family tent. Activities on offer include game drives, night drives, walking safaris, boating, mokoro excursions and fishing.

MORE ON THE REBUILD

This classic adventure camp has retained its delicate footprint and charm as a discerning safari experience. Whilst days are spent exploring the wilderness areas, evenings are wound away around the fire, down on the Kalahari sand.

The main area comprises of a dining mess in addition to a lounge, both with views over a permanent hippo pool. A photo editing suite and guest toilet complete the main area.  

Guest accommodation is simple yet comfortable canvas tents on decks, comprising of an en-suite bathroom, indoor and outdoor shower. The Shinde Footsteps family tent encompasses two bedrooms and a shared ensuite bathroom. 

A huge amount of work has gone into upgrading all the back of house facilities including a full solar array, waste management system and new staff village.

FAMILY AND WALKING SAFARIS 

For new bookings our Upgrade Menu will now replace the Young Explorers family safari and Footsteps Across the Delta walking safari.

Families wishing to book a Young Explorers family safari can now do so from any of the Ker & Downey Botswana camps, including Shinde Footsteps. Likewise, specialist walking safaris are on offer from Shinde, Shinde Footsteps, Kanana and Dinaka.

YOUNG EXPLORERS (Specialist Family Guide)

A specially designed program which offers families the opportunity to discover the wonders of the African wilderness - together.

Hosted by a specialist family guide the emphasis is on providing the family with engaging, age-appropriate activities on a flexible schedule whilst creating shared family memories to last a lifetime. On completion of the safari children receive a gift pack including shirt, cap, water bottle and certificate.

Cost includes the guides accommodation and flights between the Ker & Downey Botswana camps.

SPECIALIST WALKING GUIDE

For an immersive walking experience, the highly qualified and skilled trails guide will accompany the booking throughout their safari.

A walking safari affords guests the ultimate way to experience the African bush. Gain an in-depth knowledge of the incredible way wildlife and habitat interact. Understand the key stone species and the seasonal dynamics of the Okavango Delta and surrounding Kalahari basin.

Maximum six guests per Specialist Walking Guide. Depending on the number of guests a private vehicle may be required.

Options available to walk between Shinde and Shinde Footsteps, Kanana or Dinaka and their Sleep Out Deck.

1) Has glass bottom Mokoros?

Kanana offers both land and water based activities, one of these activities being a Mokoro excursion.

The Kanana Mokoro excursion is unique as you can enjoy both above and below water viewing. The glass panel in the floor of the Mokoro provides a window into the aquatic world.

2) Removes the roof of the vehicle?

During the cooler winter months we remove the roof of each vehicle. Superb for game viewing, birding & star gazing during a night drive.  Want to avoid the sun? The roof can be easily replaced.

3) Delivers tea/coffee with your wake-up call?

Wake to the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Watch the sun rise from your tent deck as you sip your favorite morning beverage.

5) Does Night Drives after dinner?

Head out, after dinner, into the darkness in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Get a glimpse into bush life after the sun sets. Night drives are available from Shinde, Shinde Enclave, Footsteps Camp, Kanana and Dinaka. Conducted by our professional guides, you can be out on a night drive until 10pm/11pm should you so choose.

During the cool winter months a warm blanket and hot water bottle, also known as a "Bush Baby", will be provided.

Ker & Downey Botswana is excited to announce that they will be keeping Kanana and Dinaka open through January and February 2020.

Traditionally the Ker & Downey Botswana properties close each year from the 6th January opening again on the 1st March. This camp closure period is used for annual leave, training, maintenance and refurbishments. A new system has been implemented enabling such operational functions to take place throughout the year.

2020 Low Season rates will apply to nights booked at Kanana and Dinaka. The rate: Low Season: USD 545-00 per person per night will be used for 6th January through February 2020. The same will apply for the Ker & Downey Botswana Safari Packages including Kanana and Dinaka.

The Kanana Refurbishment
Ker & Downey Botswana is pleased to announce the scheduled refurbishment of our popular property Kanana. The camp, located on the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta, has seven spacious twin or double-bedded safari tents and one family tent. Kanana will receive a face lift including an extension of the main area, adding a breath-taking breakaway seating area adjacent to the current al-fresco deck that overlooks the beautiful waterways. The camp will also receive all new furniture in both the tents and main area along with the pool deck.
With warm golds, deep greys, rich creams, turquoise and crisp whites, the refurbishment will capture a 1920s Explorer theme while retaining the camps classical charm and the incorporation of rustic elements.
This refurbishment will take place during camp closure and be completed by the 1st March 2019, when the camp opens its doors to the new season’s guests.

A hidden jewel on the Xudum River, Kanana is located in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta.
Kanana was last refurbished at the beginning of 2016. Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents and one family tent, each en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. Families are accommodated in a two-bedroomed tent, sharing an en-suite bathroom with the addition of an outdoor shower – ideal for families in this child-friendly camp. The tents are well spaced, affording privacy whilst remaining within a comfortable distance from the main camp area. The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. Due to the camps location guests can experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta's beautiful waterways by boat or Mokoro. You may actually enjoy the breath-taking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. The Sleep Out Deck that offers guests the opportunity to spend the night under the magnificent African night sky.

Situated in the Kanana Concession, the focus of activities at Kanana varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. Activities include morning and late afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively you may explore the crystal clear waterways by Mokoro or motorboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Birding is spectacular, and Kanana hosts a seasonal heronry that teems with activity, a Kanana highlight which converts all visitors to avid 'twitchers'. Guided bush walks are highly recommended as is fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharptooth catfish.

 Ker & Downey Botswana is excited to announce that they have entered into negotiations to acquire Dinaka Safari, owner of Dinaka Safari Lodge.

Ker & Downey Botswana’s intention is to expand their portfolio to include a fourth camp of the same standard as their existing properties; Shinde, Kanana and Okuti. The expected opening and welcoming of “Dinaka’s” first guests, under the new ownership, is 1st March 2018.

The safari lodge will continue to operate as is until the 11th December 2017, at which time the lodge will close and undergo its transformation into a Ker & Downey Botswana camp.

Dinaka will become a 16-bedded camp offering seven twin/double bedded tents and one family tent sleeping a maximum of 5 pax. The minimum age at Dinaka will be 7 years old and the activities on offer will include game drives, night drives, walking safaris and a sleep out deck.

An exclusive private reserve hugging the northern edge of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Dinaka is host to classic Kalahari predators and plains game.
