Botswana: Machaba Safaris mokoro trips | Мокоро туры Окаванго Ботсвана

The iconic symbol of the Botswana's delta

The silence of travelling in a mokoro means that birds and animals are less likely to take fright, allowing you the opportunity to capture that perfect photo and see that lesser-spotted bird.

See the Okavango Delta from a different point of view.

Access places that land vehicles can’t.

A skilled “poler” will guide your mokoro with control and dexterity.

Photographer’s dream as the silence of the mokoro lets you capture those perfect shots.

Soak up nature at a slower pace

Glide across mirrors of water

Very little beats the tranquility of gliding through narrow water channels in the company of smaller amphibians like reed frogs and dragonflies that you would usually miss out on.

Soak up a different point of view.

Catch details that would otherwise be missed.

See micro colourful frogs and macro-sized elephants knee-deep in water.

Unrivalled peace and silence.

Front row seats to Africa

Become one with the waters

Your experienced Machaba Safaris guide will navigate the channels while you relax and soak up the sights and sounds. From wallowing elephants to small winged water creatures, life on the water is an aquatic world of its own.

More about the mokoro

Thousands of years ago, the Bushmen used dug-out canoes to effortlessly move around the Okavango Delta. Today, eco-friendly fibreglass versions are used for game viewing safaris and the mokoro has become the iconic symbol of the Delta. Gliding over mirror-like bodies of water in one of the most idyllic spots in the world is an experience that is quite unrivalled.

Safari from the water

A little like the gondolas of Venice, your boat poler will propel your vessel around the channels and waterways of the Delta, giving you the freedom to absorb the  diversity of its wildlife species from the comfort of your seat. From plants to birds, to insects and large animals, the mokoro is the perfect place from which to view it all.

Pack for fun in the sun

It’s easy to forget about sunburn when on the water, however sunshine reflecting off a glossy surface means that you will burn from above and below your hat. Wear sunglasses, drink lots of water to stay hydrated and regularly apply a high (50+) SPF sunscreen. Slip-proof rubber-soled shoes are recommended and don’t forget the binoculars and camera.

Drink in nature's scale

The world seems a little bit bigger when viewed from the water. You will be able to appreciate the size and scale of elephants drinking and hippos and crocodiles basking – all from the safety of your boat and the protection of a highly knowledgeable Machaba Safaris guide.

Namibia: Namibian Government donates land to Botswana

President Hage Geingob revealed that the Namibian government has donated a piece of land at the port of Walvis Bay to Botswana to construct a dry port facility and make that country sea-linked. He added that the donation was not only a gesture of goodwill, but also meant to facilitate the import and export of goods and services. In addition, Geingob said Botswana and Namibia would sign a bilateral agreement for the establishment of a one-stop border post at the Mamuno-Trans-Kalahari border post.

Botswana: Senyati Safari Camp update | Сеньяти Сафари Кемп Парк Чобе Ботсвана

Senyati offers an excellent basecamp for people who do not want to stay in Chobe National Park. Senyati Safari Camp is located only 20 km from the main gate of Chobe National Park in the Elephant Corridor leading to Zimbabwe. Although Senyati Safari Camp is very private, the waterhole knows no privacy.

The waterhole is well lit through the night with a spotlight and guests can enjoy viewing animals during the whole evening. A well-stocked bar has given Senyati the reputation as the place with the bar with the best view in the world.

Free internet is provided to all guests from the viewing deck. A variety of animals come and go throughout the day. The waterhole is frequented by a good variety of species such as hyena, banded mongoose, warthogs, roan antelope, monkey baboons, buffalo, sable, elephants and the occasional leopard. During summer months buffalo herds easily exceed 300 in number and it is not uncommon to see buffalo and elephants competing for position at the waterhole. Should the king of the wild make an appearance, lion of course, the buffalo make a hasty retreat. It is a possibility that visitors have the ultimate experience of watching the king of the wild quench his thirst at the waterhole along with the regulars — the elephants. It not uncommon to see as many as 400 elephants at Senyati during October and November. Senyati is located just off the Nata Kazangula road in the Lesoma Valley right in the Elephant Corridor between Botswana and Zimbabwe. Senyati has 19 campsites, each equipped with an electric point, private shower, toilet and cooking area. Furthermore, Senyati is famous for the elephant hide from which professional as well as amateur photographers can take photos of elephants from ground level from a very close distance where you can see the animals from very closely, but the animals cannot see the photographer. Senyati offers free Satellite Wi-Fi to all guests. From 5pm to 9pm Senyati also has a gift shop with local curious as well as day-to-day necessities. The chalets are self-catering equipped with a fridge with a small freezer, stove, microwave, kettle, toaster, cutlery and crockery. Chalets are cleaned on a daily basis and are all located around the waterhole.

Chalets

(All Chalets are located around the waterhole area and have their own BBQ)

What do your chalets include?

Senyati’s chalets are spacious, equipped with cutlery, crockery, glasses, kettle, toaster, induction stove, fridge, air-conditioned(s)/fan, mosquito nets, 220V electric plugs, bedding, flushing toilet with toilet paper, hot water, braai area, chairs, tables and each chalet has a BBQ area right in front of the chalet. Wood and meat is for sale at reception.

Family Chalet (there are 3 units)

A family chalet consists of a unit which is ideally designed for a family, parents and 2 kids. Our family chalets have the extra two beds on a mezzanine floor. This is also suitable for two couples who are comfortable with each other as the second sleeping area is not enclosed. Also, if you are not fit and cannot climb steep stairs then you will not be able to sleep on the mezzanine area. There is one bathroom in each family unit.

Family Chalet with Double Bed (We only have 1 of these chalets)

This family unit has a double bed and 2 x ¾ beds in one open plan sleeping/ living area. The kitchenette is separate from the sleeping area, and it has a lovely big tree under which the braai stand is situated. It is located towards the middle of the property with a partial view of both the waterhole and the pan.

Double Chalet (there is 1 unit)

This unite has a unique view of the waterhole. It can sleep 4 and is best suited for a family. It has 1 double bed and 2 ¾ beds, all on one level. It is an open pan sleeping room with an en-suite bathroom. Outside next to the chalet there is a Bush Bath. Perfect for Honeymooners

Double Twin Chalet (We only have 2 that can sleep 10 each and 1 that can sleep 6)

These chalets are huge. They can sleep a max of 10 people and have two main bedrooms with 2 x ¾ beds inside and 2 single beds. The other beds are on the closed veranda. This chalet has a huge living dining area and is suitable for families who want to spend a holiday together.

Camping sites

Each campsite has its own private ablutions and power points (220v electric plugs), shower, toilet. Wood and meat are for sale at reception. Groups are allocated. Depending on the size of the group and the availability of campsites. Each campsite also has their own BBQ/Braai stand. You will need to bring your own equipment (Tents, Pots and Pans Etc.) We do not put toilet paper at the campsites. If you need toilet paper, kindly ask at reception. It is for free. If your campsites are infested with ants, please ask for ant poison at reception. It is for free

Electric Points: Available at all campsites (220v electric plugs).

Hot Water Boilers at Campsites: Staff arrive at 7.30 am and will start to make the morning fires. Should you wish to make your own hot water earlier, kindly do so. Please make a small fire as big fires destroy our boilers and can be dangerous.

Fire wood?

Wood is sold at reception. It is illegal to collect firewood in Botswana from the side of the road and there are officials who control is, so please refrain from doing so and if caught, you might find yourself in trouble.

Fuel/Petrol/Gasoline

All fuel originates from the South African refineries and is usually a little cheaper than in sunny South Africa.

There is no fuel available in Chobe National Park. Make sure you fill up before departure to go to or from Chobe National Park.

Kasane is your last place to refuel if you go to Moremi, Savuti etc. but then one does not use as much petrol as you imagine, as you do not drive that far. You drive long hours, but small distances. If you are going into Savuti and Moremi, it is advised that you take an extra Jerry can.

Fuel can be bought by credit card in most main towns, but cash is always the best.

No "Petrol Cards" or "Garage Cards" are accepted.

Gifts:

African gifts are available in our gift shop, Elephantastic, located at the Reception Area of Senyati.

Groceries: There is a lovely Spar in Kasane, which stocks just about everything, huge Choppies very close to Senyati (about 6km away), a fantastic Chemist in town, so just pack yourselves and come! Not necessary to stop in Francistown etc. for groceries.

How long do people stay at Senyati?

Most people stay for a minimum of 3 days. One day the day they arrive, then the next day they do a Vic Falls Transfer and the next day they go on a Chobe River cruise and then depart the next day, so a total of 3 days is recommended, but of course it depends on the need of the tourist. A fourth day can be used for a Safari drive; however, the safari drive can be combined on one day with the boat cruise. The Victoria Falls trip is an entire day trip so don’t plan anything else on that day.

Ice: Ice is available from reception.

Internet (Wi-Fi) from 5pm to 9 pm. Only for Guest staying at Senyati. Kindly ask for the password. Wi-Fi is available from the deck only.

Kids

Kids are welcome, but we ask parents to contain their kids as most of our clients visit Senyati because of their love for animals. Please see that your kids remain quiet on the deck. Your kids can play and enjoy the pool. Kids should not be unattended at pool PLEASE KEEP YOUR KIDS AWAY FROM THE ELECTRIC FENCING around the pool. Senyati will not take responsibility for any injury Parents are expected to look after their kids.

We recommend that you take your kids on a Chobe Boat cruise, which is wonderful, and to the crocodile farm in Kazungula. More information on that in this pamphlet. Or ask for details at reception when you are here. Kids enjoy playing in the sand at Senyati and are welcome to do so.

No kids are allowed into the hide without their parents. We ask for absolute silence in the hide. Senyati welcomes everyone; however, Senyati cannot take responsibility for the safety of kids if people do not look after their own kids.

But, yes, we welcome well behaved, nature loving, sweet kids as much as we love our elephants.

Senyati can be accessed by 4x4 from the Senyati sign on the Nata-Kazangula Road, however, campers who have only 2x4 transport can email Senyati for directions to an alternative route.

Natural Selection: Every dog had its day | Дикие собаки Ботсваны

Natural Selection

Every dog had its day...

AS PART OF A VACCINATION AND STERILIZATION OUTREACH INITIATIVE IN NOVEMBER 2021, WE WORKED TOGETHER WITH THE MAUN ANIMAL WELFARE SOCIETY (MAWS) & BOTSWANA PREDATOR CONSERVATION TRUST TO VACCINATE VILLAGE DOGS IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE AFRICAN WILD DOG POPULATION.

There may be some dispute about the appropriate name of the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) - also referred to as African painted dog, African hunting dog and painted wolf - but there is no disputing that this is a species under threat. In fact, African wild dogs are the most endangered of Africa's iconic apex predators with a current IUCN status of endangered, and with future prospects looking precarious.

Apart from habitat fragmentation, one of the primary threats to the African wild dog is their susceptibility to viral diseases such as Canine Distemper Virus (CDV). CDV is easily transmitted from domestic dogs to African wild dogs. Unfortunately, African wild dog contact with human settlements (and their canine counterparts) is unavoidable, especially for a wide-ranging species in an increasingly fragmented environment. Inevitably, as villages grow so too does the domestic dog population. A further complexity is that villages in Ngamiland (North-West District of Botswana) are situated in wildlife management areas, further exacerbating the likelihood of encounters with African wild dog.

The recent illness and death of a wild dog close to Khwai Village, was a timely reminder of this ever-present viral threat and the need to take immediate action. A CDV outbreak could wipe out the wild dog population of the area, and as a matter of urgency, The Natural Selection Foundation funded a vaccination program for domestic dogs in villages closest to the Khwai Private Reserve.

It was coordinated and run by the Maun Animal Welfare Society and Botswana Predator Conservation Trust. They focused on the villages of Khwai, Mababe and Sankuyo. The community support and adoption of this disease management initiative is critical for managing not only the health of village dogs, but is an essential component of protecting Botswana's wildlife, National Parks, and Game Reserves. The vaccination program creates a “buffer zone” between domestic animal diseases and wild animal populations.

In total 87 dogs were administered a 5 in 1 vaccination which covers Canine Distemper, Adenovirus, Hepatitis, Parvovirus and Parainfluenza. 79 dogs were vaccinated for Rabies and 3 dogs were sterilized.

From the beginning, Natural Selection has been about creating an excellent safari experience that gives back. Through the Natural Selection Foundation, we are fully committed to making a significant positive impact on the conservation of wildlife and on the communities living in and near wildlife areas of Africa. To do so we pledge 1.5% of every guests stay in our camps to conservation.

Botswana: Desert & Delta enlarges its portfolio with Nxamaseri | Нксамасери Лодж Ботсвана

DESERT & DELTA SAFARIS INCREASES ITS PORTFOLIO WITH THE ACQUISITION OF NXAMASERI ISLAND LODGE

Desert & Delta Safaris is delighted to announce a new addition to its luxury lodge portfolio. The company which is based, owned and operated in Botswana, has purchased Nxamaseri Island Lodge, increasing its stunning range of lodges and camps to a total of nine. The addition of Nxamaseri Island Lodge truly complements the existing eight lodges and camps, which comprises of Chobe Game Lodge, Chobe Savanna Lodge, Savute Safari Lodge, Camp Moremi, Camp Xakanaxa, Camp Okavango, Xugana Island Lodge and Leroo La Tau. Nxamaseri Island Lodge will enhance their offering and the inclusion of this stunning property strengthens its presence making Desert & Delta Safaris a company with the most comprehensive portfolio of regions in Botswana today.

Nxamaseri Island Lodge has eight stunning suites, all under the shade of huge Jackalberry trees and wild date palms. The size and atmosphere dovetail perfectly with Desert & Delta’s ethos and its CARES philosophy.

Nxamaseri Island Lodge on a secluded island in the Okavango Panhandle.

Located in the centre of two UNESCO world heritage sites: Tsodilo Hills and the Okavango Delta – it is one of the very few places in the entire world where two world heritage sites meet. Nxamaseri Island Lodge is the closest property to explore Tsodilo Hills – a remarkable cluster of huge rocky hills in the otherwise flat Kalahari Desert and home to one of Africa’s most impressive collections of ancient rock art, with over 4,500 paintings located around 400 different sites. The paintings are classified as Southern African Rock art and a combination of a favourable dry climate, and the unique caves and crevices have helped preserve the art which dates back as far back as 100,000 years.

San Paintings at Tsodilo Hills

The unique rock paintings visible at Tsodilo Hills

Nxamaseri is nestled along an ancient fossil river that once flowed from the Kavango River past the Tsodilo Hills. Today the channel connects Nxamaseri to the Panhandle of the Kavango River before it fans out to form the great Okavango Delta. Keen anglers will be attracted to the region as Botswana’s fishing hotspot for catch & release fishing for the fighting Tiger Fish.

“The addition of Nxamaseri Island Lodge is an exciting region for us to promote. Those with a good level of fitness can climb to the top of Botswana (1,400m/4,900ft asl) and travellers will feel enchanted by the presence of such impressive hills and the rich history they possess. The combination of the rocky hills amongst the harsh desert and the lush waterways with the forested islands of the Okavango panhandle makes Nxamaseri Island Lodge a prime destination. Our goal is to encourage international and regional travellers to explore the incredible cultural heritage we offer in Botswana in a manner that is environmentally and ecologically responsible and sustainable.” Enthuses, James Wilson, Marketing Director, Desert & Delta Safaris.

Fishing in the Okavango Delta with Nxamaseri Island Lodge

Desert & Delta Safaris will be including flight charter rates directly to the Nxamaseri airstrip through their sister company, Safari Air and have created several packages that combine key regions of the country to make it easier for international travellers to access this richly diverse region.

Botswana: Nxamaseri Island Lodge joins Desert & Delta Safaris | Нксамасери Лодж Ботсвана

Nxamaseri Island Lodge Joins the Desert & Delta Safaris

To celebrate nearly 40-years of operation in our home, Botswana, we are delighted to announce the acquisition of Nxamaseri Island Lodge. This takes the Desert & Delta Safaris portfolio to a total of nine camps & lodges,  making the group one of the most comprehensive safari circuits in Botswana.

Perfectly situated between the Tsodilo Hills and the Okavango Delta, it is one of very few places in the entire world where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet.

Our aim is to make this incredible destination more accessible to international travellers through our flight network with Safari Air and our exciting new Botswana package itineraries that will feature Nxamaseri.

What has Nxamaseri Island Lodge got to offer?

Culture

Located in the stunning Okavango Delta panhandle region, Nxamaseri is the closest lodge from which to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Tsodilo Hills – a remarkable cluster of huge rocky hills and home to one of Africa’s most impressive collections of ancient rock art.

There are over 4,500 paintings located around 400 different sites around the hills. Travellers can also hike to the top of Botswana while taking in the impressive history of the area.

Tsodilo Hills is a hugely significant cultural attraction and a wonderful addition to any Botswana itinerary.

Fishing

Nxamaseri and the Okavango Panhandle is Botswana’s tiger fishing mecca. Throughout the year (January – February season closed), the Okavango Delta panhandle is home to epic Tiger and Bream fishing.

Around September – November every year the “Barble Run” attracts predatory fish in their thousands and the chance to land several Tiger Fish is exceptionally high. A beautiful yet ferocious fighting fish found in the northern part of the Okavango Delta and Chobe/Zambezi river systems.

The Nxamaseri guides are expert fisherman from the local region with decades of experience who will help you get into exactly the right place to land that dream fish!

Water & Walking Activities

Mokoro and boating activities are offered all year round. This is owing to the vast amounts of water around the panhandle area. The Nxamaseri Channel is a stunning ecosystem of floodplains and unique vegetation and the combination of the large “panhandle channel” with its big papyrus thickets makes for an Okavango boating paradise.

Guides will invite guests to stop on many of the stunning secluded islands for guided walks exploring the area.

Birdwatching & Other Activities

Nxamaseri is a birdwatcher’s heaven. Around two-thirds of all Botswana’s bird species can be found around this region with frequent sightings of the rare Pels Fishing Owl and opportunities to see White-backed Night Heron and the graceful African Skimmer.

During the nesting season from August – November, a trip to the Carmine Bee-eater colony is a sight to behold. Thousands of these striking birds make their way in and out of the nest holes forming a seemingly pink mirage along red-cliffs in the southern area near Nxamaseri.

How to get to Nxamaseri Island Lodge

Charter flight

Nxamaseri Airstrip is accessible with Safari Air as well as other charter companies. Safari Air will provide access to Nxamaseri Airstrip from all airstrips around Botswana (provided they are permitted to land there).

Self-Drive Access

Self-drive access is a big portion of the Nxamaseri client base. Guests may park at a secure plot near the main road and will be transferred to Nxamaseri by the lodge (distance varies depending on time of year/water-level. 30 – 60 minutes)

From Mohembo Border (access to the Zambezi Region/Caprivi in Namibia) to Nxamaseri turn off: 45-minutes

From Maun to Nxamaseri turn off: 4 – 5 hours

Self-drive access information is available on the Desert & Delta Safaris Quick Links document.

Booking Nxamaseri Island Lodge

Nightly Rates

Standalone rates are broken into 1-2 night rates or 3+ night rates.

Green Season rates have been held and start at $350 pp per night sharing for 1-2nights stays and $330 pp per night for 3-nights or more.

All guests on 2+ night stays will be invited to do the Tsodilo Hills cultural tour.

To make the region more accessible we have created a range of packages to combine with Desert & Delta Safaris camps and lodges.

One of the itineraries on the Cultural Exploration Packages connects Chobe Game Lodge with Nxamaseri Island Lodge, Camp Xakanaxa/Camp Moremi and Leroo La Tau on an 8-night itinerary (starting at $4,608pp including charter flights from Kasane to Maun or vice versa).
