Zimbabwe: tragedy in Mana Pools National Park | Южноафриканский турист задавлен слоном в Зимбабве

Tourist killed by elephant in Zimbabwe's Mana Pools nature reserve

A South African tourist died in a Zimbabwe game park on Wednesday after being trampled by an elephant, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) said Thursday.

A 71-year-old South African tourist was trampled to death by an elephant “in full view” of his son. Michael Bernard Walsh, a veterinarian from Cape Town, was a “loyal tourist” who had been visiting Mana Pools “almost every year” for the past 35 years.

ZIMPARKS spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said Michael Bernard Walsh (71) was killed while taking an unguided tour with his son in Mana Pools National Park in the north of Zimbabwe.

The two had walked about 40 meters from where they had parked their car when they encountered the elephants, with one of them charging at them, Farawo said. For some unknown reason an elephant bull charged from about 120 meters away and seized the man and killed him, the organization said in a statement.

The son managed to escape and reach the car while Walsh could not outrun the elephant which trampled him to death.

"We allow people to take unguided tours in our parks and in this instance, the man was walking with his son when they met an elephant which charged at them.

"Unfortunately, maybe due to advanced age, the man could not escape and was trampled by the elephant," Farawo said.

“We are extremely concerned because two people have been killed in one week alone,” he said, referring to an earlier fatality in which an anti-poaching coordinator with a conservation group was trampled to death by an elephant in Victoria Falls in western Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe’s national parks and environmental groups are reporting increasing cases of conflict between humans and wildlife in recent years.

More than 40 people have died from such conflicts in parks and other rural areas in Zimbabwe so far this year. Zimbabwe has an estimated 85 000 elephants and neighboring Botswana has more than 130 000.

The two countries have the world’s largest elephant populations. The two southern African countries say they are struggling to cope with the booming numbers of elephants and are pressing to be allowed to sell their stockpile of ivory tusks that have been seized from poachers.

News from Hideaways: Mana Pools Safari Lodge, Kariba Safari Lodge and Shashani Matobo Hills Lodge

Hideaways open three new lodges in Zimbabwe.

Hideaways has recently announced the addition of three new properties to their portfolio: Mana Pools Safari Lodge, Kariba Safari Lodge and Shashani Matobo Hills Lodge. The three lodges are based in a variety of popular tourism regions around Zimbabwe.

In a conscious and consistent effort to learn from nature, creating and adapting with awareness, Hideaways has been spending time laying foundations for growth.

A year ago, Dr. Ian McCallum, author of Ecological Intelligence, planted a seed. He highlighted how nature creates new opportunities from challenging situations, utilising life’s collateral damage to build stronger, versatile and more resilient circumstances. It is through challenge we find inspiration, mirroring nature in her resilience, courageously seeking and creating new life.

In this perspective and determination for new, Hideaways’ would like to announce the addition of two properties to our portfolio: Mana Pools Safari Lodge and Kariba Safari Lodge. Two wildly different properties in two wild areas of Zimbabwe, these additions amplify our already distinctive brand, bringing their respective and proudly Zimbabwean characters to the travel terrain.

Mana Pools Safari Lodge

Located in northern Zimbabwe, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, Mana Pools Safari Lodge provides a true ‘out of africa’ experience. It’s remote location deems the park largely untouched, the wild maintaining sovereignty.

Being on the Eastern border of Mana Pools National Park, the area shares ancient wildlife corridors with Zambia, its grand Zambezi Valley Escarpment the backdrop to the horizon. This element of the untamed, coupled with that of the river flowing through, creates a haven for wildlife.

Shashani Matobo Hills, upon the hills of Matobos, encourages one to observe the landscape in all its splendour, from patio to the horizon, and beyond.

Located in Mana Pools, northern Zimbabwe, on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, Mana Pools Safari Lodge provides a true ‘out of Africa’ experience.

Kariba Safari Lodge was built with the vision of providing a holistic African experience, one of land, lake and local culture; offering encounters with the unexplored, fringed in luxury.

Kariba is the definition of wild Africa – uncharted, remote and abundant with game. Time spent here, cruising through Lake Kariba waterways, offers unparalleled game viewing and photographic opportunities with scenery and sunset unmatched anywhere on the African continent.

Kariba Safari Lodge was built with the vision of providing a holistic African experience, one of land, lake and local culture; offering encounters with the unexplored, fringed in luxury.

Hideaways’ welcomes these two properties with pride, taking the seed of inspiration from nature and growing throughout beautiful Zimbabwe. These partnerships have not only allowed us to grow, but enable our guests to experience the biodiverse wonders of Zimbabwe, each area distinctly unique and life-changing.

Machaba Collection news: Ingwe Pan Camp addition

The newest baby in the Machaba Collection is Ingwe Pan Camp situated in Mana Pools Zimbabwe. Not only is Mana a World Heritage Site, but it is also justifiably regarded as one of the top safari experiences in Africa.

Dictated by the rains, Ingwe, which sleeps a maximum of 16 guests in luxury en-suite tents, will open on the 1st May and close mid-November every year. Despite this shorter season, the diversity of the experiences on offer is both vast and unique.

Early in the season, just after the rains have ceased, the pan holds a lot of water and so is home to many of the usual suspects. From waterbuck to water-birds and kudu to kingfishers, they’re all in residence. Weather-wise, cool nights and warm days offer perfect conditions for walking from the pan to the nearby Chiruwe River. The terrain varies from baobab groves to mopane and riverine forests, perfect for birding whilst exploring unseen areas of the park. There’s always a picnic on offer too as all safaris are personalized and will revolve around the guests in camp, not a pre-set routine.

The main activity at any camp in Mana will always be walking, it’s what you come to Mana for and with our very experienced Mana guides, you’ll not only be in safe hands but will get to experience encounters that will stay with you for life. Walks take place, not only on our private concession around the pan but also on the adjacent Mana floodplain, famous for its wide, open spaces teeming with animals, especially elephant, some of them world-renowned for their ability to get up on their back feet to feed off the Albida trees. For those not wanting to walk, game- drives are always on offer as is an afternoon canoe trail on the magnificent Zambezi River. Often though, just sitting on your deck at the pan will bring you great wild-life sightings too.

However, it’s in the evenings that Ingwe brings out its trump card; it could be a big tom leopard, a massive black-maned lion, or countless hyena wandering down to the pan to drink under a night sky that is uninterrupted for 180 degrees.

Later in the season, when it’s hotter and water is scarce, the wild dogs join this parade, lazing around the pan before setting off for their early morning or evening hunts. It’s not unusual to see them drinking side by side with other predators in the extreme heat of October. The late season of September- November also sees the arrival of the big herds of buffalo and elephant cows who have come down from the pans that have dried up inland, or off the floodplain that is short on ground cover. It’s hard to beat going to sleep with the sound of an elephant bathing just metres from your tent. This is authentic Africa at its best.

Ingwe Pan Camp consists of 8 luxury tents right on the edge of the pan, all en-suite, with both an indoor and outdoor shower. There is a central lounge tent with comfortable furnishings, a self-service bar and a tea corner. Open-air dining, beneath a magnificent fig tree, complements the recreational area. Totally solar-powered and with experienced and friendly Mana staff, Ingwe is committed to giving you the safari of a lifetime. We look forward to hosting you soon.

Machaba Safaris news

Machaba Safaris Launches Three New Safari Camps

Over the last few years we have been expanding slowly, identifying conservation areas which fit our unique brand and philosophy.

We have secured two incredible areas in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, one in Mana Pools National Park, and created a private section at Gomoti Plains Camp in the Okavango Delta.

Deetema Springs Camp

The launch date is the 1 May 2019.

Eight luxury tents which include one family unit all on decks with walkways meandering between the rocks and trees of this unique site. Overlooking the Deteema seeps, this camp offers one the opportunity to sit and view incredible wildlife from the luxury of your veranda, game drive in one of Hwange’s finest wildlife areas, or walk the diverse mountainous region of northern Hwange. “This camp will become one of Hwange’s finest” said a well-known Zimbabwe professional guide.

Deka Camp

Opening just a month after Deteema, Deka will open its doors on the 1 June 2019.

Just six tents make up this small intimate camp. Located in the wild north west of Hwange national Park, Deka redefines big sky country. Nestled atop a small hill overlooking the permanent water of the Deka seeps, this camp has views which stretch forever. Wildlife abounds in this wild country, with some of the best walking in Zimbabwe. Game drives as well as night drives in our concession round off a very diverse offering.

Ingwe Pan Camp

Situated in the famous Mana Pools National Park, Ingwe will open it’s doors in 2020.

Gomoti Private

The camp is open.

Just two luxury tents, one family and one double, plus a private dining and pool area make up this small exclusive part of Gomoti. Situated at Gomoti Plains yet totally private. Your own camp, staff and experienced field guide. Gomoti private is booked on an exclusive basis only.

We look forward to thrilling and spoiling your guests and once again encourage all of you to come and visit our amazing camps.
