Namibia: accidents & how to drive on gravel roads - safety tips

Two separate crashes involving self-drive tourists were reported on the C14 route over the long weekend. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported in both incidents.

Ironically, both crashes happened at the same location, it being the low-water bridge in the Gaub Pass.

DRIVING ON GRAVEL ROADS IN NAMIBIA

Gravel roads are constantly changing and considered as "low-grip surface". When driving on gravel roads in Namibia, driving slowly is the key to a safe journey. This reduces the risk of losing traction when you stop, accelerate, or take a corner.

Always take into consideration the dust factor. PLEASE drive with the headlights on for increased visibility!

Guidelines:

▪︎ ALL OCCUPANTS in the vehicle must be restrained - BUCKLE-UP!

▪︎ Drive on the left side of the road.

▪︎ DON'T drive in the centre of the road when a vehicle is approaching. Keep to the left of the road a far and as safe possible.

▪︎ Minimize driving on the right side of the road because of extreme, adverse, or hazardous road conditions (e.g., bad corrugation, debris) on the left side of road. This can only be done when it is safe, when you are able to observe the road ahead clearly and as a last option.

▪︎ Ensure that your vehicle is 100% roadworthy before travelling on any gravel road - ensure that the spare tyre is in a good condition and taking an additional spare tyre with is not a bad idea.

▪︎ Keep both hands on the steering wheel and ensure a firm grip at all times

▪︎ Adhere to the speed limit - REMEMBER that the speed limit is normally 100 km/h on gravel roads unless otherwise indicated - REMEMBER that the speed limit is not a target.

▪︎ Adapt speed as per road conditions.

▪︎ Be aware of loose gravel & sand on road surface and protruding rock, especially while roadwork is in progress.

▪︎ Don't jerk or cause sudden movement on the steering wheel.

▪︎ Avoid sudden acceleration, deceleration, or harsh braking.

▪︎ Move to the left when a vehicle is busy overtaking.

▪︎ Monitor the mirror's regularly.

▪︎ Avoid driving in a dust cloud - rather reduce speed and maintain a proper safe following distance (200 - 300 meters advised).

▪︎ DON'T DRIVE IN CONVOY FORMAT and NEVER DRIVE IN THE DUST-TRAIL OF THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF YOU.

▪︎ If you are unable to see the road ahead clearly, reduce speed, and don't even consider overtaking.

▪︎ Reduce speed well ahead of any river crossings, a bend, or even a blind rise.

▪︎ Overtaking - ask yourself: DO I HAVE TO OVERTAKE? ONLY overtake when it is safe and you are able to observe the road ahead clearly. Remain to right side of road as far and safe possible and only return to the left side of road when it is safe for both you and the vehicle you are busy overtaking.

▪︎ Don't accelerate when a vehicle is busy overtaking you.

▪︎ For a smoother drive and better control, adapt tyre pressure as per road conditions.

▪︎ ALWAYS drive with the headlights on.

▪︎ Always move to the left when a vehicle is approaching, but in the same breath, keep a safe distance from the road edge.

▪︎ Monitor the dust trail of approaching vehicles.

▪︎ Never stop on the other side of a blind crest - if their is a need to stop, pull well off the road surface at a safe location.

▪︎ Road conditions change overnight due to high traffic volumes and weather conditions. Adapt  driving habits accordingly.

▪︎ Always be on the lookout for game / animals on the road surface.

South Africa: Pati shipwreck

SAHRA Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage

February 29:

“This day in our shipwreck and aeronautical wreck history”

1976: Pati, this Cyprian motor-powered freighter wrecked in dense fog on Thunderbolt Reef at Cape Recife in the Eastern Cape. Plans were made to tow it off, but upon examination it was found that it was so badly holed that it would have sunk had it been gotten off.  Fears of widespread pollution from its stores of bunker oil were eventually laid to rest when the oil was burned aboard.

A helicopter being used in the rescue operations of the crew of the Pati (1976) after it ran aground on Thunderbolt Reef, with the Cape Recife lighthouse in the background

The main cargo was cement meant for the Persian Gulf. There is some believe that its engine block is visible near the eponymous Pati car park, however what is visible in the surf is a boiler, currently believed to be from the wreck of the James Searle III (1955), which was a steam-powered tug. The wreck of the Pati can be dived on near Thunderbolt Reef, but because of the strong current and surge, it is considered a dangerous dive. From various vantage points at Cape Recife and the Wildside, the engine block of the "Pati" can clearly be seen projecting from the western edge of Thunderbolt Reef.

Namibia: tragic accident at Walvis Bay Dune 7

One person died in a fatal accident behind Dune 7 at Walvis Bay on 30 December 2023 in the afternoon.

Marshall Ranger Sean Naude says he received a call about the accident while at another event.

“We were on standby at the Weskus Vasbyt when someone told us a vehicle had rolled in the dunes.

“We rushed there and tried our best to assist, but sadly a young lady in the vehicle had succumbed to her injuries,” Naude says.

He says they extracted the remaining occupants from the vehicle, who were transported to hospital by E-Med Rescue and St Gabriel’s ambulance service.

Naude cautions against driving in the dunes as they often change.

“If you don’t know what you’re doing it is easy to lose control or go off a blind dune,” he says.

The Namibian has reached out to Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba, who says he is yet to release a full report on the incident.

Namibia: Search for missing Omaruru man

Search for missing Omaruru man intensifies

SWAKOPMUND - The police have escalated their efforts in the search for Robby Michael, a resident of Omaruru, who went missing during a fishing trip to Henties Bay.

Michael’s mysterious disappearance has left authorities puzzled and his loved ones deeply concerned.

The incident came to light when fishermen and residents travelling from Swakopmund to Henties Bay stumbled upon Michael’s abandoned vehicle in the sea.

Michael went on a fishing trip with his friends but remained at the fishing site when his friends went to overnight at Henties Bay.

His vehicle, a white extended cab Toyota D4D with registration number N 2426 OM was found in the ocean at Mile 72 camping area, approximately 40 kilometres north of Henties Bay. There was no one in the car or seen in the area at the time.

The vehicle exhibited signs of significant damage, and, notably, the key was still in the ignition.

This has led investigators to suspect that Michael may have parked close to the sea to relax, inadvertently exposing his vehicle to the rising tide, which could have caused it to be engulfed by the sea.

The Namibia Wildlife Resorts is also aware of the incident and has also issued a warning to the public about the dangers of parking vehicles too close to the water, especially during high tide.

South Africa: Road alert M41, Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal

Road alert M41, Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal

A trucker's believed to have lost control of the vehicle on the M41 eastbound.

The truck rammed into more than 30 vehicles stationary near the M4 on ramp, causing absolute chaos on the M41.

The wreckage of vehicles can be seen stretching across some 400 metres along the busy route.

Some have overturned, or smashed into the barrier while others were mangled almost beyond recognition.

Witnesses said that that the truck ploughed into traffic that had come to a standstill.

The vehicle then rolled into a conservation site at Umhlanga Ridge before falling onto its side.

Fifteen people, including a pregnant woman, were taken to hospital.

One man who was involved in the pile-up said he is thankful to be alive.

"All cars were standing still because of the traffic jam and all of a sudden, I heard a big bang then all the cars that were behind me were pushing each other.

Durban metro police spokesperson Boysie Zungu said it's going to take a while to clear the road.

"At this stage, it is very difficult to say when we are going to open it because it is going to take time. We are advising motorists to use other routes until further notice."

Medics have confirmed that over 50 cars were involved in the crash.

Fortunately, no deaths have been reported.
