Some precautionary measures have been put in place in vicinity of the Waterberg Park, safeguarding the Namibian meat industry after an African buffalo escaped from the park into the 26 farms in the area.

Waterberg National Park is Namibian National park on the Waterberg Plateau, 170 km north-east of Windhoek in the Otjozondjupa Region.

Escape of the buffalo and the precautionary measures have been confirmed by officials as swift action was needed after animal escaped, because Namibia does not allow African Buffalo outside national parks because of the high risk of transmission of foot-and-mouth disease to domestic cattle.

Movement restrictions have been imposed on the 26 farms after the buffalo was reported to have escaped from the park last week.

According to Namibian wildlife legislation, any buffalo straying into farming areas should be destroyed on sight.
