South Africa: MalaMala Game Reserve: Rhino Dehorning Project

Rhino Dehorning Project

JOINT ANNOUNCEMENT ISSUED BY

MalaMala Game Reserve

Sabie Game Reserve NPC

Sabi Sand Wildtuin Association

(collectively “The Parties”)

A joint operation of de-horning of rhino within the Sabi Sand Protected Area (an open reserve system comprising the Sabi Sand Wildtuin, MalaMala Game Reserve and the Sabie Game Reserve) will commence in May 2022. The ever-increasing threat of rhino poaching continues to negatively impact this protected species and the rhino population is under threat and diminishing within the Greater Kruger area.

The Parties will work together in continued efforts to combat this atrocity and embark on a dehorning programme that will assist in our efforts to protect these endangered species. The dehorning programme has commenced in some of our neighbouring reserves, notably the Kruger National Park, Balule, Klaserie, Manyeleti and Thornybush reserves with great success.

Whilst it is a decision that was not taken lightly, we cannot remain passive and it is incumbent on us, as custodians of this environment, to take this step for the continued protection of the wildlife that resides within our reserves. The Parties acknowledged that this is a measure that we simply must now act on.

The dehorning operation is part of a broader effort to protect South Africa’s rhino. Other measures include the awareness and education of the communities surrounding the reserve as to the benefit of conserving these flagship species, and the link between sustainability of tourism and the provision of essential employment in the sector.
