Namibia: famous old Jetty landmark of Swakopmund | Пирс Свакопмунд Намибия

Swakopmund is ever developing, which is more evident when looking at the past. The Jetty is probably the most well-known and recognizable of the historical features of Swakopmund.

Since the completion of the wooden Jetty in 1905 and the subsequent construction of the steel Jetty in 1911 (which was not completed to its original designed length), it has been revered as one of Swakopmund's many iconic attractions.

Botswana: Flame of Africa Dop en Tjop Fishing Experience

What’s New in Chobe, Botswana?

Dop en Tjop Fishing Experience

Our latest edition to the family is a Fishing Trip done our way. We believe a Braai (BBQ) should be on every boat, even better if its a fishing boat. Behold every fisherman/woman’s dream, bringing the exciting thrill of Tiger Fishing and the fun around the fire together. It’s named Dop en Tjop for a reason.

(if you get it, you’re our kinda person, and we get you).

The idea is as such, we supply the boat, skipper who knows the waters along with the fuel and fishing setup for 6 people including rods, landing nets, lures and even the kitchen sink, no really there is a kitchen sink with running water!

The Dop en Tjop is ideal for a group of 10 passengers, 6 of which can fish at the same time.

Rods suitable for Adults and Children are Included along with tackle and landing equipment.

Three Burner Gas Braai (BBQ) on board, simply bring your ideal Braai favorites and cook up a storm on the Chobe while the fish bite. Includes gas, cooler box full of ice, utensils and a small pack of braai spices. If you like, we can make a stop at our dedicated jetty outside the Spar where you can hop off to grab your desired Dop and Tjop’s.

Yes there really is a Kitchen sink!

You can rent the boat out for a half day or go the full hog and enjoy a full day on the river. Don’t worry there is a toilet on board, oh and did we mention the kitchen sink!

Namibia: Swakopmund Platz am Meer shopping center & fishing video

Platz am Meer Swakopmund shopping center is a landmark on the coastline of Namibia offering quality restaurants, luxury seafront apartments, banks and a selected variety of food and fashion retailers.

This new development is designed in harmony with the environment and offers luxury apartments and penthouses all linked to fashionable shopping with beachfront views, green walkways and child-friendly play areas.

Elegance and comfort, taken to new heights by the beauty of the Namibian coastline, is what makes Platz am Meer development the place to be.

YouTube video:

Sustainability features

Shopping Centres normally have large roofed areas making them ideal for photovoltaic electricity generation.

We are retro-fitting all our Centres with solar power systems. In Swakopmund, with its high electricity

price from the grid, this was an even more sensible option. All apartments and restaurants have access to or are supplied with natural gas, which is a cleaner fossil fuel than the diesel used to generate electricity in Walvis Bay.

The Shopping Centre’s walkways are naturally ventilated with the airflow controlled by the opening and closing of clerestory windows according to the need of the day. Natural light is as important in managing the electrical demand, so great care was given in flooding the mall with natural light from all sides.

Only high quality materials and suitable techniques for this unique environment were used in its construction. With the Sulphur rich mist in Swakopmund causing aggressive and corrosive conditions,

innovative installations were crucial. Imported self-adhesive roof tiles, with no metal were used. Such

finishes will enhance the lifespan of the building and simultaneously reduce the need for costly maintenance works and frequent improvements.

Some interesting facts about Platz am Meer:

• First two escalators for Swakopmund/Erongo area of Namibia

• First Dis-Chem and Checkers outlets in Erongo area

• ± 920 000 man hours of construction work

• Rock placed for breakwater: 135 000 tons

• Concrete placed: 15 866m³ (2 644 truckloads of 6m³ each – 13km queue of trucks)

• Bricks used: 2 764 951 (923 truckloads, a 5,5km queue of trucks)

• Form work: 100 579m² (16 rugby fields)

• Brick force: 70km used

• Reinforcing bar (Rebar) used: 1 129 tons

• Bags of cement: 135 565 bags/6 780 tons (226 truckloads of 30 tons each, a 2,48km queue of trucks)

• Plaster: 43 139m² (7 rugby fields)

Platz am Meer is a Namibian landmark that the local community can be proud of, granting opportunities, employment and business initiatives that should be claimed and cultivated for the better of the people.

We are confident that the Waterfront will become a popular destination, not only attracting the community of Swakopmund to its diverse amenities and activities, but also be a destination of choice for those from other towns along the coast.

Platz Am Meer accommodates 72 shops.

Namibia: The Tug Restaurant Swakopmund | Ресторан Таг Намибия

The Tug Restaurant Swakopmund
Dining at the Tug is a rustic and authentic experience, definitely not fine dining. It takes you on a culinary journey renowned for its home-made freshness, great locally sourced seafood and fresh produce, tempting desserts and a vast selection of South African Wines.

YouTube video:

Designed and built around the original oil-fired Danie Hugo Tug boat which was constructed in the ship yards of Port Glasgow Scotland in 1959, she saw her final operating days in Walvis Bay during 1984 and then received her final resting place and new lease of life on the 12th December 1993 to become what is known today as The Tug Restaurant. The Bar and upper Bridge is where diners can experience the original and authentic Danie Hugo Tug Boat.

Not only is this venue situated on the very frontline of Swakopmund with unforgettable panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, but it is also a world famous landmark for folk to frequent, to unwind, sample the culinary treasures on offer and to hear, watch, smell and feel the ocean at play.
