South Africa: Pengilly House in Clifton, Cape Town

Pengilly House

STAY IN ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC ARCHITECTURAL HOMES IN AFRICA

Protected by the peaks of Lion’s Head and perched over Clifton’s sandy coves, Pengilly House is as extraordinary as its alluring setting.

Designed by Peerutin Karol, this masterpiece in Cape Town’s swishest beach destination pays homage to iconic midcentury modern architecture. And now, thanks to In Residence by Pieter Brundyn, you can actually live here…

Such is the cinematic aesthetic of Pengilly House—which channels the essence of Southern Californian Modernism—that you’d be entirely unsurprised to hear James Bond himself drawling a ‘shaken not stirred’ cocktail request at the sunken bar in the entertainment pavilion cantilevered over the swimming pool.

This sculptural home captures the zeitgeist of the jet-set era, when visionary designs reflected the star quality of their residents as well as their dramatic and beautiful locations, from Malibu to Acapulco. Until very recently, you had to travel to Palm Springs Modernism Week to visit and admire these iconic mid-century modern homes. But not anymore! Since 2015 Clifton sports its very own modernist icon in Pengilly.

The home’s design certainly unlocks the beauty of this coastline. Unfolding out of the mountain slopes, it follows the natural topography of Nettleton Ridge.

“Viewed from above, the edges are a series of undulating curves. The idea was to mimic the undulations of the roadscape below the house, which winds around the natural forms of the mountain. But, really, the horizontal width of the site allowed for every room to enjoy a view of the coastline below,” explains architect, David Peerutin.

This striking iteration of modernist architecture is clearly completely at home here in its dramatic Clifton setting.

Through In Residence you now have the chance to make yourself at home in Cape Town’s own futuristic masterpiece, where urban living blends with nature and time stands still.

In Residence: Explore extraordinary Antarctica from Cape Town

Explore extraordinary Antarctica, the world’s last true wilderness frontier, following in the pioneering footsteps of a mere handful of...

It is a rare privilege to set foot on Antarctica’s ancient blue ice and immerse yourself in an otherworldly environment guaranteed to fascinate, challenge and change you. Antarctica is not to be trifled with; it is a vast, ancient world owned—and tamed—by no one. Parts of this ice-sheet continent have had continuous glacier cover for perhaps as long as 20 million years.

Just a five-hour flight by Gulfstream jet from Cape Town gets you to Wolf’s Fang ice runway in Queen Maud Land.

The crystal air, remarkable light, the sculptural sweep of snow and ice, and the sharp mountain peaks of the Henriksen Nunataks that pierce through the glaciers envelop you. Expect to be dwarfed by the wild, austere majesty.

Antarctica’s landscapes are surreal and hauntingly beautiful. The luminous light in the ice tunnels whittled out beneath the Southern Ocean makes them a photographer’s dream. From the summit of a nunatak, the horizon is endless: the world’s largest ice sheet is the essence of infinity. The wind etches its stories into the shapes and forms of the frozen landscape, and the glacial meltwater rivers and streams form turquoise capillaries that undulate through the bright white snowscapes during the ephemeral Antarctic summer.

From the warm cocoon of your base camp, each day brings new encounters and new wonders. Even now, reaching the southernmost point on Earth is a feat achieved by very few and it certainly is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. A flight to the geographic South Pole brings you to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station made famous by those legendary polar explorers.

For the wildlife lover, a day at the 28,000-strong colony of emperor penguins in Atka Bay—the largest penguin species is life-changing. Emperor penguins have no natural predators so are unafraid of humans, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in the noise and commotion of the colony. At the fringes, you may see predatory Southern Giant Petrels and South Polar Skuas, as well as Leopard and Wedder seals.

Thrill-seekers will rise to the challenge of scaling blue-ice glaciers—formed millennia ago—or summiting a nunatak during rock-climbing expeditions guided by former world-champion climbers. Antarctica is not just for athletes, however. If ice climbing or abseiling down an ice wall are not on your bucket list, treks and exploration by ski or skidoo give you unprecedented access to this snowy wonderland. And there is enormous peace and serenity to be found in gentle hikes in these pristine surrounds. Listen out for the sounds of silence: from the wail of the wind to the ghostly singing of the vibrating ice shelf or the sharp cracks of breaking sea ice reverberating through the icy air. The Antarctic soundtrack is a phenomenon of its own: curiously compelling and one-hundred-percent natural.

The Antarctic season is short – these camps are accessible only in the southern hemisphere summer months of November to January, so book now.

Given the vagaries of the Antarctic weather, you must be based in Cape Town for at least two days before your scheduled departure date, ready for a weather gap. But who needs an excuse to visit this über-cool city? In Residence by Pieter Brundyn has exclusive-use villas to match the wow factor of Antarctica, albeit for completely different reasons – so speak to us to find your perfect match.

South Africa: In Residence and Dtravel platform new partnership

New partnership between industry leaders in luxury travel and crypto currency blockchain tech promises democratized, accessible, but...

IN RESIDENCE BY PIETER BRUNDYN JOINS FORCES WITH DTRAVEL, A NEW DECENTRALIZED HOME-SHARING PLATFORM CONTROLLED BY HOSTS AND GUESTS ALIKE

New partnership between industry leaders in luxury travel and crypto currency blockchain tech promises democratized, accessible, but nonetheless exclusive high-end travel experience around the world and South Africa.

Exclusively listed with In Residence by Pieter Brundyn, travelers using the Dtravel platform can now rent the iconic Iron Man House in Clifton, South Africa.

Cape Town, SA: Global travel is ready for a revolution in the post-pandemic age. At the forefront of this project are In Residence by Pieter Brundyn, the leading luxury lifestyle and villa rental and management company, and Dtravel, a recently-launched decentralized crypto currency platform for the home-sharing economy. These two forward-looking industry leaders have now partnered together to reconstitute the luxury vacation into a more accessible, affordable, and integrated experience.

The new venture brings consumers a new way to book the most exclusive In Residence experiences  while leveraging the lowest fees in the industry—a result of DTravel’s seamless deployment of blockchain technology to ease the payment and booking process by bypassing the usual fees associated with the latter. A selection of In Residence’s luxury homes will be available for booking starting this fall using Dtravel tokens, TRVL.

Introduced last month with the support of Binance-backed Travala.com, the world’s leading blockchain-based travel booking platform, DTravel is expected to launch property bookings this fall, having amassed over 200,000 properties in more than 2,000 cities since its launch. These hundreds of thousands of vacation rentals are powered by its native token (TRVL), which is held by all hosts. TRVL can be used for booking stays, qualifying for rewards and loyalty programs, participating in platform governance, and more.

Buying TRVL tokens hence transforms the individual crypto-investor, voyager, or house-renter into a veritable co-owner of a broader travel ecosystem that merges the lowest prices, the highest-end experiences, and the most seamless, individualized control over the booking process. With the Decenrtralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), a digital cooperative allowing each individual to become a decision-maker and possess an equally vested interest in this integrated but decentralized virtual economy, hosts and guests can now truly interact within a space that maximises the ownership and preferences of both within the booking experience.

In Residence, meanwhile, will ensure that this democratized, cheaper, more integrated booking experience yields the most spectacular luxury experiences on offer in the travel industry. While the company’s discreet, highly personalized booking system and concierge service have already given its clients more control over the booking experience, the partnership with DTravel in the current global climate promises to take this approach to a new level. Pieter Brundyn, CEO at In Residence, has acknowledged the opportunity this initiative presents, stating: "With travel starting to rebound and a record level of interest in blockchain technologies like crypto currencies, DTravel gives eager hosts what has been missing to date: control and ownership over the booking experience".

About Dtravel

Dtravel is the world's first home-sharing economy for the people, by the people. Booking fees are 50% lower than in other platforms and hosts enjoy 0% fees. Dtravel is a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) governed by community stakeholders who hold TRVL tokens. Built on decentralized finance (DeFi) blockchain technology and powered by the TRVL token, Dtravel brings more transparency and lower fees to the home rental market.

South Africa: In Residence news

At In Residence, we have always been devoted to giving back to our local community and ensuring that as we grow, the community around us grows and prospers, too. Indeed, to us, the concept of hospitality is inextricably linked to ensuring not only the wellbeing and upliftment of our guests but also the entire ecosystem underpinning the services we offer. In this spirit, we are delighted to share the two latest exciting developments in our mission to improve ourselves and our local community: the creation of the In Residence Foundation and the In Residence Academy.

The In Residence Foundation is a not-for-profit organization with the vision of inspiring educational, entrepreneurial, and cultural excellence in our local South African communities. Our aim is to seek out and then sponsor under-funded projects in the region; as dedicated supporters and collectors of contemporary African art, we will in particular focus on endorsing the unique cultural and art-focused events in South Africa. We wish to unveil the boundlessly dynamic and creative elements within the South African cultural scene that, lacking the resources necessary to gain traction and visibility within both the local and global cultural milieu, would otherwise remain hidden. True to its philanthropic origins, the Foundation will as such focus on previously-unsupported projects attempting to address the contemporaneous challenges facing us and that, beyond demonstrating entrepreneurial nous and ambition, also interrogate our present attitudes and approaches.

Beyond the Foundation’s inherent cultural bent, it will additionally strive to support alternative education platforms and the development of innovative pedagogical tools, given the great value—and ongoing necessity—of improving educational access and quality in a country whose biggest current obstacle to its development is arguably its continued lack of equal academic opportunities for all. Hence, in alignment with this broader educational mission, we have also separately established the In Residence Academy—a multi-disciplinary pedagogical collective focusing on upskilling local South Africans within the villa-rental industry whose administrative costs, like the Foundation, are to be fully covered by In Residence.

Fundamentally, the Academy aims to give back by imparting knowledge upon ambitious South Africans aspiring to establish or further specialize themselves in the field of luxury villa-rental. Through personalized, focused training courses, resources, and modules - all taught by experts in their fields - the Academy will provide the best professional foundations for these individuals, ultimately empowering them to make themselves more marketable, earn a better living, and improve their contribution to the hospitality industry in their desired capacity as a housekeeper, chef, butler, or driver.

We are confident that this internal upliftment of individuals will not only improve the local community in pragmatic, tangible ways such as job creation, but also will ultimately take hospitality services and the luxury villa-rental scene in South Africa to another level - for having empowered, educated specialists as employees makes for a better overall customer experience. Moreover, with the luxury hospitality industry increasingly gravitating away from generic hotels towards tailor-made villa-rental experiences, we see this initiative as an investment in both our local resources on an individual human level as well as the high-end villa market as a whole.

We have spoken before about what constitutes foundations of the quintessential In Residence experience: a tireless commitment to delivering the highest standards of luxury, a personalized, human relationship with our clients, and a degree of refinement that pushes the boundaries of the contemporary villa-rental experience. We see these two new initiatives as integral to strengthening those foundations, because behind every In Residence experience is an infrastructure—social, cultural, logistical—that extends beyond us but which is fundamental to our success. As proud South Africans, we consider this ecosystem as an extension of the In Residence community, and hence, we feel an obligation to improve it.

This sense of duty, combined with our South African heritage, can be appositely tied to the well-known concept of Ubuntu—roughly definable as “humanity towards others”, and which entails achieving fulfilment and prosperity through altruism (namely, giving back) towards the people in one’s immediate community. We can think of no concept more fitting as an embodiment of the core values underpinning the In Residence Foundation, the In Residence Academy, and In Residence as a whole than Ubuntu. On that note, we would like to re-emphasize our excitement in introducing these two new institutions to our dear community—both our clientele and those around us who constitute the infrastructure that allows us to do what we do to our best. May these new ventures bring increased fulfillment and prosperity, in short, give back, to those on both sides of our wonderful community!

Directly overlooking the vast expanses of the Atlantic Ocean is Mwanzoleo, a six-story house built above and around a dramatic rocky enclave that has, appropriately, come to be known as “God’s Window” by local residents. Located a stone’s throw away from the world-renowned exclusive beaches of Clifton, this property occupies one of the African continent’s most picturesque and coveted residential locations. Featuring a quintessentially modern, minimalistic architectural exterior and interior, this magnificent residence is equipped with five en-suite bedrooms, a cinema and library, a gym, a study, a dedicated beauty room, and a special penthouse “cellar”. Fully-integrated climate control and music entertainment systems furthermore ensure that all the amenities of modern luxury are both seamless and immediately available to Mwanzoleo’s guests. The villa’s coup de grace, however, is its large deck with a rim-flow heated swimming pool, which, directly facing the ocean, provides uninterrupted panoramic views that make for almost-spiritual experiences of sublime sunsets and sea storms alike.

Directly perched above the highly-exclusive Psarou Beach—an iconic, tucked-away inlet known for its calm, crystal-clear Aegean waters - Villa Psarou Delight is a behemothic luxury villa that can accommodate up to 20 guests per rental, making it ideal for larger parties. The earth-toned, stripped-down interior offers a sanctuary against the sweltering Cycladic summer heat, allowing guests to lounge about and retreat into the relaxing embrace of this spacious villa at ease. Should one seek to indulge in the singular nightlife and cosmopolitan bustle of Mykonos, the town center is a mere 3km away, providing a perfect counterbalance to the quiet, secluded comforts of the villa. With its multiple dining terraces, enormous swimming pool, and many pieces of fine contemporary art that complement its surroundings, Villa Psarou Delight remains faithful to its name—a true delight for the senses.

With unprecedented service, and world-class dining, The Grand Pavilion is the perfect blend of Cape Town's legendary laid-back luxury scene with iconic sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean that will stay with you long after your table’s been cleared. Food is a form of connection—a way to bond the land and sea, culture, and people. That's why preparation and presentation demand our equal attention. At the Pavilion, we promise a contemporary and upscale twist on the quintessential Seapoint eatery with picturesque views and tantalizing menus to create the perfect ambience. Harry's Bar is a vibrant, up-tempo space with a sophisticated and playful bent that offers guests a contemporary upscale twist. Featuring grand dining and jamboree experience. A place to celebrate our love affair with the beach, passing moments and memories from generation to generation.

CAPE TOWN

SOUTH AFRICA

The summer festive season - now upon us at last - catapults Cape Town into the world’s apex holiday destinations. It is unquestionable that, during the summer, the city transforms into one of the hottest, most desirable spots of the international lifestyle and cultural scenes. With is flawless natural beauty and singularly intimate luxury experiences, Cape Town surprises with the variety of unique encounters.

Indeed, a summer in the Cape is always synonymous with the spectacular sunshine days, sparkling oceans, and pearlescent sand beaches that define its Mediterranean climate. A mere forty-minute-long drive out of the city to the iconic Boland region yields abundant Provençale vineyards in which not only some of the world’s best wine but also food are to be found.

But it’s not just the city’s natural and culinary singularity that guarantees a premium lifestyle experience; the South African creative impetus without fail always reaches its climax during the hottest months of the year, in which the country and continent’s most brilliant and dynamic creative minds converge on Africa’s southernmost tip.

As just one example of the summer of 2020’s offerings for those choosing to make the cultural pilgrimage to Cape Town is Kate Gottgens’ striking new exhibition at SMAC gallery in Cape Town, entitled Skyglow on Mars Black. Featuring a new body of dystopian paintings made by the Capetonian artist Gottgens during the lockdown months, her artworks are a striking collection of brightly-hued, futuristic canvases which invite both deep introspection as well as escape. With its imaginary landscapes and arresting visual qualities, Gottgens’ exhibit is a testament to the creative, reflexive spirit of South African art—qualities which will surely make Cape Town one of the most enticing post-coronavirus destinations in terms of its cultural innovations.

In a similar vein, Stevenson Gallery recently inaugurated its second exhibition with the artist Mame-Diarra Niang entitled Call Me When You Get There. A collection of 52 intimate works conceived during lockdown isolation out of a desire to exercise freedom of movement and to overcome psychological and physical boundaries through technology, Niang’s exhibit invites the viewer to lose themselves within the stills of warped Google Maps images—a call to freedom and escape after a year that has been largely defined by stasis and restriction.

Although strikingly different from a visual perspective, in both Gottgens’ and Niang’s exhibitions, we find the common threads of introspection and escapism; both exhibits are striking testaments to the power of the imagination of African contemporary art. This escapist impulse, this imagination, although perhaps in a different sense and context, is also shared by us. Indeed, we at In Residence are uncompromisingly dedicated to fulfilling our mission of realizing our clientele’s desire for intimacy and escape through our carefully-curated luxury villas and in-house concierge service which ensure a discreet, personalized, and refined experience of the Mother City and all that it has to offer.

Moreover, Cape Town’s array of accessible holiday experiences and accommodation is rendered even more accessible in the summertime, with global airlines offering direct seasonal flights from major cities across the United States and Europe.

If you desire a truly unique destination experience, Cape Town beckons. We at In Residence look forward to welcoming you this summer to our villas, and wish you the warmest season’s greetings.

See You Soon,

Pieter & The In Residence Team

South Africa: In Residence

In Residence South Africa

Thus far, the year 2020 has allowed us much time for reflection and introspection, especially in terms of our broader mission: providing transformative, personalized experiences of the South African lifestyle in all of its splendour and diversity to our guests.

As such, In Residence is delighted to announce the initiation of four partnerships, each intended to take your luxury rental experience to an even higher level. These four partnerships represent consolidations in some of the foundational domains of the In Residence experience: fine dining, event planning and management, and private security.

First, we have launched an exclusive food-catering partnership with Jacques Erasmus, the accomplished interior designer, chef, and artist. Founder of the acclaimed Hemelhuijs Eatery—a veritable watering-hole for in-the-know Capetonians—Jacques’ food philosophy is simple and unpretentious. His unique modernisation of traditional Afrikaans cuisine entails synthesising modern elements with dishes such as mosbolletjiebrood and frikkadels, using fresh, locally and ethically-sourced ingredients to realise his singular culinary vision.

Second, we have partnered with François van Tonder, the founder of Sorrento Events, to elevate our event planning and management services. Having transformed his business into an internationally-acclaimed boutique events agency, François guarantees the highest standards of style and elegance, building up an international clientele that entrusts him with planning their events around the world. Rooted firmly in his belief that memory underpins the success of an event, he curates the perfect location, décor, food, and beverages according to the wishes of each individual client.

Supplementing our partnership with Francois is Ursula Forrest and her company Boutique Concepts. With an extensive background in the hospitality, events, and travel industry, Ursula has melded her business and creative acumen to offer luxury weddings and celebrations for international couples in South Africa. Her meticulous attention to detail and passion for design guarantee weddings and luxury events of distinction.

Lastly, as a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security needs of our clients, we have partnered with Grové Smith—a seasoned security professional who has honed his skills both locally and internationally. This partnership represents a strategic approach to security integrating the latest technology and discrete interactions with the specific requirements of each client.

What each of these exciting partnerships has in common is a shared commitment to offering bespoke services according to the wishes of each client, delivered by the leading South African innovators in the culinary, event management, and security fields.

We are confident that as the luxury rental market slowly reopens, these partnerships will ensure that In Residence remains the front runner of the hospitality industry in South Africa. More importantly, however, they will enable us to realize the most fulfilling aspect of our work: bringing novel experiences and happiness through an uncompromising yet simple luxury to our clients.
