Footsteps in Africa, Botswana: The Hot Dry Season

Footsteps in Africa

The Hot Dry Season

The annual flood through the Okavango swamps is dynamic and unique each year with its progression and size greatly impacting the guest experience in different ways depending on the time of year.

This year, the peak flood pulse has passed our Delta lodges and the water levels have started to drop in front of our camps. As the water levels drop, the hippos congregate in the pools and lagoons that are left. With guest safety being our number one priority we have to curtail mokoro activities accordingly.

Sadly, the speed of the change cannot be predicted as many factors are at play, but we kindly ask that you advise guests staying at those camps with lower river levels so that they have realistic expectations and are not disappointed on their arrival. Guests going to Delta Camp will need their walking shoes available and as always, hats, sunscreen and binoculars. Their guide will meet them at the airstrip with cool drinks and take them on a guided walk into Delta Camp that will last about 20-30 minutes. They have the opportunity to see any kind of wildlife during this walk.

All of our Delta camps are now limiting the use of mokoro to crossing the channels so as to access the islands from where our guides then focus on their specialised walking safaris which our camps are known the world over for. At some point in the next month or so it will not be possible to do any mekoro activities.

Our Mokoro Trails will finish for the year at the end of October and will commence on 01 April 2023.

The benefit of the dropping water is that game congregates along the river banks to take in the last of the water. Additionally, the last of the summer grasses die off allowing unhindered viewing over greater distances. Of course, be reminded that it is springtime and the kigalia, acacia species and Lonchocarpus capassa trees all flower, leaving the sweetest profusion of their subtle scents in the air.

Every time of year offers something that is both exceptional and something which needs to be considered for optimal guest comfort and experience. Please help your guests to be prepared for the particularities of this time of the year at our Delta camps.

Botswana: new Mankwe Tented Retreat | Манкве Ботсвана

NEW  BOTSWANA CAMP | MANKWE TENTED RETREAT

Sun Destinations is extremely proud and excited to announce the launch of Mankwe Tented Retreat, a new addition to the Botswana portfolio of coveted camps and lodges. Welcome on board!

After a devastating fire in 2016, the camp underwent a complete revamp and rebrand. Mankwe Tented Retreat is effortlessly stylish, yet so simple in its design.

Perfectly situated on a massive private concession, this lodge boasts a combination of finely tuned luxury with the classic authenticity of canvas and wooden structures. Mankwe blends in seamlessly with its natural surroundings and adds a feeling of being reunited with Africa’s endless wilderness.

From elegant spacious suites to health spas and secluded lounge areas to sit and lament on the wonders of safari, Mankwe Tented Retreat has every aspect of what a modern safari to Botswana should offer. There are also two swimming pools, both of which offer the perfect respite from the African sun.

This wooded retreat is the perfect way to start or end a dream safari to Botswana.

Mankwe Tented Retreat is effortlessly stylish, yet so simple in its design.

Hidden among the mopane trees in a 365 000 hectare concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve, lies a simple and stylish wooden tented lodge.

Optional game drives and excursions take place in the world-renown Moremi Game Reserve and Okavango Delta, while daily drives take place in Mankwe's private concession.

The exceptional location of the lodge in true Botswana wilderness makes it a regular host to elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dogs.

It is in the perfect position for observing the perennial drama of the African Bushveld and provides excellent birding.

Activities at the camp include morning and afternoon game drives, as well as after-dark spotlight game drives in the concession.

Mankwe is the perfect place from which to begin a journey into the Delta, where there are many islands dotted throughout the myriad of waterways. If the water levels are high enough, guests can add on a traditional mokoro or boating experience while out in the Moremi.

Other activities on-site include special sundowner set-ups, birdwatching and guided walks with the San people.

Latest News from Kangara Adventure Safaris | Кангара Сафарис Ботсвана

Latest News from Kangara Safaris

Spectacular Savute.

Over Easter we decided to go and scope out Savute. For 3 nights we were spoiled with having this diverse area to ourselves. It did not disappoint. Marsh Pride at Marabou Pan, a very shy elusive leopard with its impala kill in the brow of a Raintree, morning coffee under a gallery of baobabs and sundowners watching the evening glow radiate of Bushman Hill. The drive from Maun was 6 hours in duration but well worth it and if you are prepared and well briefed as to expectations then you cannot be disappointed.

At Kangara we are very strong on managing guests expectations.

Savute is incorporated into one of our 5 night packages which combines Northern Moremi and Savute, with a transfer straight out to Kasane. Please e-mail for a detailed itinerary.

Travel to Botswana

Regulations remain the same as our previous newsletters. Safari Industry and self - drive market is slowly picking up. We hope to be operating our first safari in July, our last being March 2019 just before Botswana went into lockdown.

Kangara is ready! Our vehicles are serviced, our insurance is in place and staff are undergoing new Standard Operating Procedures with Covid measures in place!

Other News!

Moremi Game Reserve is now open after being closed due to flooding. We took a day trip out there to check it for ourselves to the Xini and Blackpools area. A lot of water and deep crossings but still manageable. Hippo and Crocodile of course and big cats were seen outside the park close to Kaziikini.

OKMCT, the community that we work with to run mokoro safaris into NG32 have announced quite a significant hike in daily rates for 2022, to include daily mokoro hire rates on top of your guide rates and entrance fees.

And Last of All.....

Our 2022 rates are out, with 3 levels of safari comfort.

Raintree Camp

Progress is slow as we still await funding. Regardless we hope to have a campsite up and running this year. We are halfway through building a main ablution block. Progress will be in stages until we reach our final product of private campsites with private ablutions and self-catering chalets. Contact us for more info and rates.
