Botswana: Ker & Downey Botswana completes refurbishment of Okuti Camp

Okuti Refurbishment Launch

Ker & Downey Botswana completes refurbishment of Okuti Camp

Ker & Downey Botswana has completed the full refurbishment of Okuti accentuating its unique architecture of curved arches and doorways which pay homage to aspects of Botswana's parliament building, where the arches represent unity, strength and harmony.

Okuti Camp YouTube video:

Okuti enjoys a prime location overlooking the enormous Xakanaxa lagoon boasting uninterrupted views of the Maunachira channel. A wide variety of Okavango wildlife wander along the riverbanks in front of the camp with the Xakanaxa region remaining one of Moremi Game Reserve's best year-round wildlife hotspots.

Okuti's extensive structural renovations and innovative improvements have retained its understated luxury and rustic charm. With the interior design expertise of Maun based Lien Smith (Interior Designer) of Thakadu Treasures and Nardia Cronje (Interior Architect) of Nomvula Design, the reimagined full sorts and decor replacements assure comfort, enhance guest experience and elevate the camp to a new level of luxury.

Always forging new ways, Ker & Downey Botswana are proud that the majority of the new interiors were manufactured in Maun, thus supporting the local industry and its talented artisans.

The complete transformation of Okuti's look and feel is modern and the camp is truly a one-of-a-kind, with a design that seamlessly blends into the natural surroundings. The room's new layout and amenities have been rearranged to enhance the breathtaking views out over the lagoon and river, allowing guests to enjoy nature to the horizon from the comfort of their room. Other new room fixtures, such as the flooring and lighting, have transformed the rooms into a more stylish and brighter space.

The overall ambience exudes luxury and sophistication, ensuring that every guest enjoys a truly unforgettable experience at Okuti. We invite you to come and experience the newly refurbished camp for yourself. Whether you are a first-timer or a returning guest, we are confident that you will appreciate the improvements that have been made to this stunning camp.

Botswana: Shinde Camp Rebuild | Шинде Кемп Ботсвана

Shinde Camp Rebuild

It’s finally here, the official announcement of the Shinde Rebuild.
Shinde is an iconic camp, one of the first in the Okavango Delta and loved by many. The new Shinde will be built in a way that pays homage to its former self.

Shinde has recently bid farewell to its last guests before undergoing a total transformation.

Retaining the authentic classic safari style, the new tents and main area will provide a luxury experience with a touch of historical charm.

The decor can be described as having the best of nature within an authentic safari design - still with the understated, friendly and intimate KDB feeling. Think Elegant, Classic, Opulent ‘Out of Africa’. A ‘worldly’ sophisticated safari experience.

Our aim is to bring elements of the Okavango flowing into the camp with lily pad and other fauna artwork in brass and copper. Capturing a feeling of luxury plus authentic safari with comfortable and elegant - but not dated or complicated furniture.
Bringing the best of traditional safari design over the years to capture a feeling and place in time. Feeling fresh but grounded and earthy still with leathers, cream, rich woods.

Many pieces of furniture and decor items will be “Made in Maun”, utilising Botswana artisans and supporting our ethos to buy locally.

Shinde will have completed its transformation ready to welcome guests on the 1st June 2020.
Key points:
° 100% solar conversion.
° One family tent – two bedrooms with shared en-suite bathroom, sleeping a MAX. 5 pax.
° Seven twin/double tents - one guide tent (guest standard).
° Each bathroom will have both an indoor and outdoor shower.
° Reduced min age from 10 to 7 years of age - standardising the KDB portfolio (except for Footsteps Across the Delta – walking safari, min age 16).
° Retain the tree house feel with a multi-tiered main area.
° Addition of an outside dining deck.
° Lounges, dining areas (indoor and outdoor), fire deck all with beautiful views over a permanent lagoon. Same location as existing dining area.
° New arrivals area, in the place of the old fire deck.
° New pool with views over a permanent channel.
° Shinde Enclave to be rebuilt providing a private bar, lounge, dining area, mini library, outside fire deck and sun lounger spot. Same location as existing structure.
° Jetty moved to a secluded location.
° Back of house will receive a new staff village kitchen, laundry and common area. New office for the camp managers and upgraded management houses.
° We will continue with no wi-fi and provide a guest laptop connected to wired Internet.
° No increase in rates, new camp but same great value.

The Kanana Refurbishment
Ker & Downey Botswana is pleased to announce the scheduled refurbishment of our popular property Kanana. The camp, located on the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta, has seven spacious twin or double-bedded safari tents and one family tent. Kanana will receive a face lift including an extension of the main area, adding a breath-taking breakaway seating area adjacent to the current al-fresco deck that overlooks the beautiful waterways. The camp will also receive all new furniture in both the tents and main area along with the pool deck.
With warm golds, deep greys, rich creams, turquoise and crisp whites, the refurbishment will capture a 1920s Explorer theme while retaining the camps classical charm and the incorporation of rustic elements.
This refurbishment will take place during camp closure and be completed by the 1st March 2019, when the camp opens its doors to the new season’s guests.

A hidden jewel on the Xudum River, Kanana is located in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta.
Kanana was last refurbished at the beginning of 2016. Guests are accommodated in seven spacious twin and double-bedded safari tents and one family tent, each en-suite bathroom has a large walk-in shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet. Families are accommodated in a two-bedroomed tent, sharing an en-suite bathroom with the addition of an outdoor shower – ideal for families in this child-friendly camp. The tents are well spaced, affording privacy whilst remaining within a comfortable distance from the main camp area. The annual floods transform parts of this concession into a true water paradise, offering guests the best of both worlds. Due to the camps location guests can experience magnificent game sightings during drives as well as the unique experience of exploring the delta's beautiful waterways by boat or Mokoro. You may actually enjoy the breath-taking spectacle of the water visibly rising around the camp’s raised teak decks. The Sleep Out Deck that offers guests the opportunity to spend the night under the magnificent African night sky.

Situated in the Kanana Concession, the focus of activities at Kanana varies with the rising and falling levels of the Okavango Delta. Activities include morning and late afternoon game drives in open safari vehicles, with afternoon game drives often continuing into the evening. Alternatively you may explore the crystal clear waterways by Mokoro or motorboat, and enjoy the magnificent variety of birds, plant and reptile species found in the area. Birding is spectacular, and Kanana hosts a seasonal heronry that teems with activity, a Kanana highlight which converts all visitors to avid 'twitchers'. Guided bush walks are highly recommended as is fishing for tilapia, African pike and sharptooth catfish.
