Zambia: Health & Safety Update from Chundukwa River Lodge

Chundukwa River Lodge

HEALTH AND SAFETY UPDATE

We would like to take this opportunity to discuss the recent outbreak of cholera in the Lusaka region of Zambia and to address safety concerns that our valued agents and guests may have on this matter.

Cholera surfaces in many of our rainy seasons in Zambia (November-April). It peaks at the height of our rainy season (January-March) and it is generally limited to the peri-urban areas of high density living. It is closely linked to inadequate access to clean water and sanitation.

Infection will only cause symptoms in 5 people out of 100 infected and as per the World Health Organisation "Cholera is easily treated. The majority of people can be treated successfully through prompt administration of oral rehydration solution (ORS)." There are oral cholera vaccinations available, "While the vaccines are safe, the risk of disease, even to travellers is so minute" so vaccination is not commonly recommended for travellers." Nevertheless, these vaccinations are readily available and provide 90% protection against illness within 2 weeks the second oral dose.

Enhanced Health & Safety

Chundukwa River Lodge lies 25 km outside of Livingstone town and does not use municipal water. We are almost 600 km from the outbreak which is in Lusaka, our capital city.

The Matero township, one of the affected shanty compounds of Lusaka, the country's capital, is most affected by the current outbreak and this is where health workers have now commenced the administration of the oral cholera vaccine. The mass vaccination campaign will target over 1,5 million people in areas of high risk of transmission in Lusaka – including Matero, Kanyama and Chawama.

We have always had a comprehensive sanitation program at Chundukwa River Lodge and Zambian Horseback Safaris, and this strong foundation allows us to adapt quickly to evolving advice from the World Health Organization and our local health officials. We will continue to monitor their guidelines and adjust our measures accordingly.

We utilise bottled, mineral water in the lodge for drinking, ice, washing vegetables and salads, kitchen use and bottled water is readily available in our guest rooms for brushing teeth and other.

Chundukwa River Lodge remains a haven where your guests can retreat, breathe, and reboot among beautiful surroundings.

If you would like to know more about our increased hygiene levels and safety measures, we would be happy to answer any specific questions you may have.

Doug, Gail and the Chundukwa Team

Namibia: launching new route linking Windhoek and Victoria Falls

A private airline in Namibia is to launch new route linking Windhoek & Victoria Falls in 2024

Namibian private airline, FlyNamibia, has announced the planned launch of the new Windhoek-Victoria Falls service, commencing on April 4, 2024.

FlyNamibia Managing Director Andre Compion said in a statement that flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays between Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport and the iconic Zimbabwean resort town famous for its spectacular waterfalls.

"This new route is a key element in FlyNamibia's network expansion strategy, which aims to enhance regional connectivity and promote tourism within Namibia, and position Windhoek as an alternative gateway to the region," Compion said.

According to Compion, by connecting Windhoek and Victoria Falls, the airline will create new travel opportunities for tourists and also for business travelers. "In doing so, FlyNamibia will stimulate much-needed tourism while also fostering trade, commerce, and broader economic activity between Namibia and Zimbabwe."

The airline anticipates positive impacts on the tourism sector, benefiting tour operators, hospitality and accommodation businesses, as well as safari excursions and adventure travel operators.

Bushtracks Africa: Victoria Falls - the ultimate adrenaline destination

Bushtracks Africa

Victoria Falls - the ultimate adrenaline destination.

The stunning Batoka Gorge is situated between Zimbabwe and Zambia, downstream from the Victoria Falls. Carved as the mighty Zambezi eroded deposited sandstone from between basalt that had cracked as it cooled the 110-metre deep gorge provides a beautiful backdrop for high-wire activities.

The ultimate adrenaline-filled adventures race over the water churning far below-as thrill seekers soar, zip, and plummet from dizzying heights. Options include abseiling, the gorge swing, which combines a free fall of 53m with a swing right across the gorge and back, and the 'flying fox’ cable slide across the top of the gorge. The Victoria Falls Bridge spans the gorge and offers an additional option, the bungee jump: at 111 meters, it is one of the highest jumps in the world.

Seeing the cliff face fall away from you as you race away from it is an incredible experience - far more thrilling than any roller coaster or fair ride you could ever do, and with the added bonus of extreme natural beauty surrounding you. Various packages are available that offer combinations of the various activities.

Botswana: Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge joins Sun Destinations

CHOBE MOPANI FOREST LODGE

We officially welcome Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge to the Sun Destinations portfolio. The lodge complements the rest of our accommodation options along the Trails of Botswana route, offering plenty of scope to explore the Chobe region.

Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge overlooks a thriving waterhole in the remote Kasane Forest Reserve, a relatively unexplored concession bordering the Zambezi National Park in the northern stretches of Botswana. The closest safari tourist town is Kasane, which has an airport open to both domestic and international flights.

Boasting 20 bedrooms over two storeys that all face the waterhole, this secluded hideaway ensures every need is met in terms of accommodation. Fans, mosquito nets, safes, private balconies with seating, and butler’s trays in each room provide a much needed sense of comfort.

In addition to the standard bedroom options, there are also 2 luxury Meru style tents on raised platforms that cater for guests requiring something a little bit more luxurious.

For those needing a respite from the African heat, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a swimming pool on-site, complete with a deck area with chairs and umbrellas. When you’re not soaking up the tranquility of the bushveld at the pool’s edge, you can spend time in the boma area where a crackling fire breaks the silence of the bushveld.

The closest safari tourist town is Kasane, which has an airport that is open to both domestic and international flights.

The lodge’s claim to fame is its prolific elephant herds, many of which can be spotted congregating around the lodge’s waterhole - it’s not uncommon to spend evenings dining with elephants. In addition to Chobe Mopani Forest Lodge’s enviable location, it is also fast becoming a sought-after safari destination for large groups seeking a lodge of superior quality with African inspired design.

Boasting 20 bedrooms that all face the waterhole (two levels), this secluded hideaway ensures every need is met in terms of accommodation. Fans, mosquito nets, safes, private balconies with seating, and butler’s trays in each room provide a much needed sense of comfort. In addition to the standard bedroom options, there are also 2 luxury Meru style tents on raised platforms that cater for guests requiring something a little bit more luxurious.

The main area of the lodge is joined to the rooms by a quaint wooden walkway that meanders its way from the rooms to an expansive reception area housing a curio shop, and a further viewing deck overlooking the waterhole. There is also a massage spa being built, which will offer another dimension to the already sublime safari experience.

The two dining areas each have a small bar area, and like the rest of the lodge, overlooks the bustling waterhole. Safari goers can expect to dine in splendour, while being introduced a fusion of flavours during meal times. Dining at Chobe Mopani is a protracted affair, and great care is taken with the dishes served. Hospitality here is top notch.

For those needing a respite from the African heat, you’ll be pleased to know that there is a swimming pool on-site, complete with a deck area with chairs and umbrellas. Included in your safari experience are two activities per day, which can include sundowner drives to the Kazuma Pan; a full day into the Chobe National Park for game drives and a boat cruise; cultural village tours; and day trips to Victoria Falls.

These safaris open up a world of opportunity to view the high concentration of African wild dog, leopard, buffalo, elephant, lion, impalas, zebras, antelope, and plains game. Because the lodge is located between two parks - Chobe National Park and the Zambezi National Park - the game viewing is exceptional.
