Agama River Camp Progress update

Updates on Agama River Camp

We wish to extend our gratitude for your support through the first phase of construction to expand the existing Agama River Camp capacity. An additional 10 standard bungalows have been completed and are ready to accommodate guests.
With this said, we wish to inform you that construction of the additional 20 luxury bungalows is still underway. We understand that this has been a very sensitive matter to all in the tourism industry and we kindly ask you to inform your guests that construction is still in progress. We are expecting work to be completed by the end of October 2019.
Although construction noise will be kept to a minimum while we have guests, if any guest (s) prefer to cancel their reservation we will be happy to offer a refund and avoid any bad reviews before we have even started with the new and improved Agama Lodge.
Kindly take note that campsite option has been discontinued. There are no camping sites as the new luxury bungalows are constructed on the same ground previously used for camping.

Zimbabwe: Verney’s Camp in Hwange

VERNEY'S CAMP
MONTHLY GAME SIGHTINGS

After having an incredible month of April, no one would have thought May could be even better, but it was! We encountered some stunning sightings.
As our winter starts here Hwange, most of our trees and forests lie dormant in our Kalahari sandstone formation. Our natural water sources dry up in response to daytime heat and are further depleted by the returning elephants. This marks the beginning of our dry season.
In our African conditions some of our animals cannot do without enough moisture a good example is our African Elephant. This drying of natural pans means the highest concentrations of elephants are now coming to have water in our eco-friendly solar pumped pans. It’s always a great experience when guests have their dinner under the stars whilst they are listening to the iconic call of the wild made by some elephants stomach rumbles and youngsters trumpeting.

The long winter nights mean that hyenas will have more time for their nocturnal activities. This month we had the best hyena sightings in front of the camp during the night drives. Seeing these creatures several times means higher chances of them denning within our concession. Our guests were mesmerized by the hyenas that were calling and laughing in front of camp while we were sitting at the campfire. They requested a night drive and nine hyenas were sighted on that same night. Their full beauty was revealed under the spotlight.
In this month we also had a special visitor - the African Wild Dog or “painted wolf”. One solitary dog was seen by guests when they were having some bush sundowners. The following day they saw the same individual battling to bring down a fully grown up kudu as it ventured and found its way into the water pan in front of the camp. The Dog fought for several minutes then gave up the battle trotted towards Sidanga pan – another one of our hotspot areas in the concession.

Giraffes are now making a difference. A journey of about twenty to thirty individuals is seen regularly coming to drink at the pan during day time. It’s also amazing to watch them walk through, the worst part is when they run. Did you know a “Journey” of giraffes becomes a “Tower” when they stop to eat of drink?

In the scorching heat of our drying pans, we see a lot of hornbills collecting mud to seal the cavities of breeding areas. African fish eagles are also sighted in tall trees in front of the camp, often in hot pursuit of the frogs and some red billed teals. Red-billed spurfowls also give us wake-up calls early in the morning as they start to display their presence.
Some of the other sightings included lots of plains game and a wonderful sighting of lions on a giraffe kill.
Until next month...
James and Verney’s Camp guides.

Botswana: new owners & renovations at Deception Valley Lodge

#DeceptionValleyLodge #Africa #Botswana #Kalahari #SanBushman #FootstepsInAfrica #Bushmen #Maun #Kasane #CentralKalahariGameReserve

Deception Valley Lodge has new owners with ambitious plans to regenerate their Kalahari lodge and surrounding areas
Deception Valley Lodge has new owners who are investing substantially in the lodge and the surrounding area. They are entirely refurbishing the lodge, extending the conservancy boundaries and reintroducing endemic species, installing solar power and creating a recycling program. Guests can expect the same warm welcome but with an exciting, fresh experience.
From the 1st of January until the 25th of March Deception Valley Lodge will be undergoing these exciting refurbishments and upgrades. To ensure that no guest experience is affected the lodge will be closed.

The eight rooms will be extensively refurbished with new glass folding doors, making the rooms feel lighter and more spacious. The guest areas overlooking the waterhole will remain a key feature and the pool area will be enlarged with a gym and spa. Each safari vehicle will be equipped with camera stands and the lodge will set aside an area specially designed for people to display, edit and organise their photographs when they are back from a drive.
The conservancy is being expanded from 15,000 hectares to 40,000 hectares and endemic species of the Kalahari reintroduced such as black and white rhino, eland, springbok and meerkat.
DVL will continue to offer a diverse array of activities including day and night game drives with the ability to go off road. Expert guiding will continue to delight guests, especially those seeking to take the perfect photograph. The San Bushman Activity will still be offered and guided by Braam Badenhorst, who grew up in this area of the Kalahari and remains one of the Lodge owners. Braam works with several of his childhood friends who share the heritage of how the San used to live and survive through their language and storytelling. Stargazing is also available using the new, professional telescope - guests are amazed at what they can see and learn about the immense Botswana sky.
DVL will endeavour to keep its footprint to a minimum by using more solar power and investment in bio tanks for waste - all underpinned by a strong program of recycling and separating when possible to minimise waste. A vegetable garden will be planted so that guests can enjoy deliciously fresh produce at each meal.
Deception Valley Lodge is adding a brand new family suite with large, bi-folding doors opening on to a spacious deck with views beyond and these artists impressions will give you a flavour of what is in store.
