Namibia: Interesting Facts about Windhoek

Interesting Facts about Windhoek

The Goreangab Water Reclamation Plant is internationally renowned as the first plant in the world to reclaim domestic sewage for drinking water purposes. After 32 years it continues to be the only plant in the world to do so.

Windhoek is one of the world's major centres for the karakul sheep-skin trade.

Windhoek has two traditional names: Otjomuise and /Ae //Gams.

Windhoek's name may be derived from the word "Winterhoek", the name of the mountains surrounding Tulbagh in South Africa.

Windhoek was formally established on 18 October 1890.

The first pharmacy in Windhoek, Luisen Apotheke, was opened in 1910 and still trades under the same name, located in Independence Avenue in city center.

Miss Universe was hosted in the City of Windhoek in 1992.

Archaeological remains of an elephant kill, dated at between 5 000 and 20 000 years ago, were discovered during construction work in 1961. They can be seen in the Owela Museum on Robert Mugabe Avenue.

In addition to the elephant bones, some quartz stone tools such as hammer stones and choppers were also discovered in Zoo Park.

The first road to be tarred in 1928 was the main street, Kaiser Street (now Independence Avenue).

The Alte Feste on Robert Mugabe Avenue is the oldest surviving building in Windhoek and houses part of our national museum.

In Post Street Mall, the Gibeon Meteorite Fountain displays 31 of the original 77 meteorites on steel columns. The Gibeon meteorite shower occurred south-east of Gibeon in southern Namibia, and is the largest known shower of its kind in the world.

In 2006, Windhoek made an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the "World's Largest Braai".

Windhoek has one of the oldest weather bureaus in the world. Established in 1863, it has been in uninterrupted use ever since.

Namibia: Weavers Tourism & Marketing Services: Moon Mountain Lodge update

Weavers Tourism & Marketing Services

We hope you are having a much better season this year compared to the last few years under the COVID umbrella.

Amidst the challenges we still face from other directions, we remain positive that 2023 will be an even greater year for tourism.

As a matter of interest, we at Moon Mountain Lodge wish to inform everybody that the lodge is fully operational and open all year round. There was a recent rumor that the lodge is closed. This is not the case, please continue quoting and include Moon Mountain Lodge in your itineraries, we value and appreciate your support.

While the lockdowns persisted, Moon ML upheld its renovations and maintenance plans. All in an attempt to welcome our guests back to tip-top facilities and service with a view that will leave a lasting impression for a long time!

Moon Mountain Lodge offers luxury tented accommodation in the Namib Desert. The lodge can be seen at the foot of the Naukluft Mountains adjacent to the C19 road situated 30 km south of Solitaire. On route to the apricot-colored dunes of Sossusvlei, yet far enough for travelers looking for privacy and solitude, the lodge is ideal for independent travelers.

There are 11 Luxury tented rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a private deck, each with its own splash pool. There are also 6 spacious suites boasting all these facilities plus an extra private lounge area for the ultimate relaxation hub. All rooms have solid king-size bed bases with large individual matrasses and individual duvets and bedding. The bed can not be moved apart in case a twin room is requested, we suggest single rooms are booked if sharing is not possible. The units are elevated on stilts above the surroundings, making them extra environmentally friendly. The chic canvas construction permits ventilation from the prevailing west wind that cools the rooms at the hottest time of the year. This ultimately makes guests feel closer to nature.

As you are surrounded by a breathtaking environment, there is no need for a television. Scattered herds of gemsbok, springbok, and mountain zebra can be viewed from the privacy of your unit while they graze the plains below.

Hail in Windhoek, Namibia on 16 October 2022:

Photos are taken around the city.

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of Namibia.

It is located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area, at around 1,700 metres above sea level, almost exactly at the country's geographical centre.

The population of Windhoek in 2020 was 431,000 which is growing continually due to an influx from all over Namibia.

Footsteps in Africa, Botswana: The Hot Dry Season

Footsteps in Africa

The Hot Dry Season

The annual flood through the Okavango swamps is dynamic and unique each year with its progression and size greatly impacting the guest experience in different ways depending on the time of year.

This year, the peak flood pulse has passed our Delta lodges and the water levels have started to drop in front of our camps. As the water levels drop, the hippos congregate in the pools and lagoons that are left. With guest safety being our number one priority we have to curtail mokoro activities accordingly.

Sadly, the speed of the change cannot be predicted as many factors are at play, but we kindly ask that you advise guests staying at those camps with lower river levels so that they have realistic expectations and are not disappointed on their arrival. Guests going to Delta Camp will need their walking shoes available and as always, hats, sunscreen and binoculars. Their guide will meet them at the airstrip with cool drinks and take them on a guided walk into Delta Camp that will last about 20-30 minutes. They have the opportunity to see any kind of wildlife during this walk.

All of our Delta camps are now limiting the use of mokoro to crossing the channels so as to access the islands from where our guides then focus on their specialised walking safaris which our camps are known the world over for. At some point in the next month or so it will not be possible to do any mekoro activities.

Our Mokoro Trails will finish for the year at the end of October and will commence on 01 April 2023.

The benefit of the dropping water is that game congregates along the river banks to take in the last of the water. Additionally, the last of the summer grasses die off allowing unhindered viewing over greater distances. Of course, be reminded that it is springtime and the kigalia, acacia species and Lonchocarpus capassa trees all flower, leaving the sweetest profusion of their subtle scents in the air.

Every time of year offers something that is both exceptional and something which needs to be considered for optimal guest comfort and experience. Please help your guests to be prepared for the particularities of this time of the year at our Delta camps.

South Africa: !Khamab Kalahari Reserve

A conservation and eco-tourism icon. !Khamab Kalahari Reserve.

Introducing !Khamab Kalahari Reserve, a pristine wilderness and conservation area which forms part of the legendary Kalahari Desert.

Situated in the central north of South Africa and bordering Botswana to the north, !Khamab is off the beaten track, remote, exclusive and vast. It is an outstanding conservation project which aims for the typical eastern-Kalahari landscapes to return to a status as close to natural as possible by keeping management interference to the minimum.

The Kalahari Desert is regarded as one of few remaining wilderness areas in Africa! The largest undisturbed, arid sandy savannah in Africa, covering almost 930 000 square kilometres of Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa, and it forms part of the 1.5 million square kilometre Kalahari Basin, which includes the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans. !Khamab falls within the Eastern Kalahari Bushveld Bioregion which is part of the Savanna Biome.

This 90 000-hectare conservation icon is in a malaria-free area and is safe to visit all year round. The size of the reserve and vast wilderness areas devoid of roads makes !Khamab ideally suited for discerning travellers that want something more than just the normal game viewing experience. A minimum of three to four nights in camp is recommended to make the most of the !Khamab experience.

The small, exclusive, old style lodge, !Khamab Kalahari Lodge, is a place of privacy and remoteness where one will find serenity for your soul in the expanse of wilderness exclusive to our guests.

As we accommodate only eight guests sharing, a visit to !Khamab Kalahari Lodge is a truly intimate, exclusive, personal and private wilderness experience. Guests have the privilege of having the entire reserve to themselves, adding to the feeling of remoteness that the Kalahari brings. !Khamab Kalahari Lodge is an ideal destination for any occasion, from small get-togethers to exclusive honeymoons.

We offer a versatile menu that features outstanding local dishes, tailored to your preferences.  Depending on weather, dinner is served in various venues for an exciting culinary experience.

Our activities are tailored around the preference of each guest, but we encourage as much time out on the reserve as possible, whether on a game drive in open safari vehicles or a guided bush walk. However, the nature of activities is determined by the weather conditions and the guest's specific requirements.

As the reserve embarks on adding an eco-tourism segment to its profile, a new luxury, exclusive and state of the art tented safari camp is planned which promises to be second to none, and we look forward to share the timing of this iconic camp, soon to be born.

We would be glad to share more information, rates, offer training, schedule a telephonic or zoom conversation on this exciting eco-tourism journey.

Namibia: Newsletter of BüllsPort Lodge & Farm

Newsletter of BüllsPort Lodge & Farm | October 2022

As you certainly know, you can travel to Namibia again without hurdles, just like in the time before Corona.

And there has been a lot going on with us, too. In a nutshell:

• Guests from Germany compensate for flight emissions with a "Give & Take" excursion to the ǂNabasib primary school

• the successfully started sheep breeding at BüllsPort will not be further extended for several reasons

• photos and video clips of experiences at the NAUkLuFT can now be shared with loved ones at home from every room at BüllsPort Lodge.

Guests compensate flight by supporting ǂNabasib

"What an experience." "Very intense." "Touching."

The four guests of BüllsPort were visibly impressed on the way back from their excursion to the nearby ǂNabasib primary school.

Two hours of insight into an area of Namibian everyday life beyond the lodges and animals. And a "give & take", in two respects.

“What an experience.” “Very intense.” “Touching.” The four guests of BüllsPort were visibly impressed on the way back from their excursion to the nearby ǂNabasib primary school. Two hours of insight into an area of Namibian everyday life beyond the lodges and animals. And a “give & take”, in two respects.

This is exactly what the two married couples who were guests at BüllsPort at the beginning of September had wished for. “In view of the increasingly serious consequences of climate change, we want to compensate at least a little for the long-distance flight and support a concrete project,” they had written by email a few weeks before the start of the trip.

“We gladly like to support something you do at Büllsport or at ǂNabasib, in connection with the school for which you built the well. If you have any ideas…” The guests had heard about the borehole project for ǂNabasib in April, from BüllsPort’s newsletter.

They immediately agreed to the suggestion to visit the nearby primary school ǂNabasib. The school management confirmed the date for the tour: Monday afternoon, around 3.00 p.m., thus after classes.

Teacher Augustinus Ortmann welcomed the guests, showed them the secretary’s office and two of the classrooms. He described the daily school routine, listed the subjects and gave them examples from the lessons. These included the spelling and pronunciation of the four click sounds in Khoekhoegowab, the language of the Nama and Damara.

There was no sign of the nearly 200 pupils from grades 1 to 7 who attend the primary school. “From noon onwards, they are in the boarding house next door,” explained Ortmann, who teaches classes 5, 6 and 7 in Afrikaans, Natural Science and Social Studies.

The multi-purpose hall of the boarding home (“Paul Peter Land Heim”) marked the end of the tour. The cherry on the top, as they say. Because here, the whole school was waiting for the guests. At least it felt like it. The cultural group led by teacher Petrina Goeieman sang songs and performed dances of the Owambo, Baster and Nama with obvious joy.

At the end there was a big mutual “thank you”. And a touching handing over of the envelope with the amount from the four guests for the two-hour activity. Which the government school can use for buying additional teaching materials. The state funds are limited and are only enough for the bare necessities.

At the same time, the income is recognition and motivation for the children and teachers to maintain the culture and tradition of their ancestors. In effect, a double give & take.

But that is not all. On their departure the next day, the two couples donated a considerable amount each to the Naukluft Foundation. Founded by BüllsPort and the Ababis Guest Farm, this foundation supports the ǂNabasib Primary School whenever it is needed. Like in March with the new borehole.
