Botswana: Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge news & introduction

#GhohaHillsSavutiLodge
#GhohaHillsSavutiLodgeBotswana

For many of you the name Savuti conjures up images of the Savuti channel and marsh, which is now an oasis in the middle of Botswana, after the Savuti channel started flowing again in 2010. We all know and have seen the Ghoha Hills, standing like sentinels above the flat Savuti bush, and have all wondered what it would be like to stand on top  and look out over this incredible piece of wilderness. Well now we can.

It really is something to be so high above the surrounding veld and look out over many hundreds of kilometres of wilderness at night and not see one light. There are very few places in the world one can still do this.

Ghoha Hills Savuti Lodge was built out of the dream of one man who has lived in Botswana his whole life, he has created a lodge so unique in Botswana that one would travel here just to see the sunrise over the Savuti from up high.

The lodge has been built in such a way that it blends in with the Hills, large thatch main area and canvas wrapped luxury tents on wooden floors. The interiors are stunning and well appointed. Each luxury tent has a view to the horizon and makes one feel incredibly humble.

The activities include game drives to the famous Savuti Marsh, visit rock paintings that are over 3000 years old, game drive in the concession around camp which is exclusively ours, or just relax at the viewing deck in front of the lodge and let the game come to you. As one would expect its Savuti game at its best.

The lodge has been designed to run of 100% solar energy and has one of the most sophisticated solar farms available which harvest the suns clean energy.

I urge you all to take time on your next visit to Botswana to visit and share this piece of paradise with us.

Namibia: news from Gondwana: Namib Dune Cabins & stunning photo gallery

#NamibDuneCabins
#GondwanaNamibia
#NamibDesertLodge

#NamibDesertLodgeNamibia

Dear Friends of Gondwana,

To experience the Namib Desert on foot means dramatic scenery, a star-studded night sky, the small Tok-Tokkie beetle, fairy circles and – with lots of luck – a golden mole or a giraffe. From 1 November 2013 some of the many miracles of the oldest desert on earth can be admired on a hiking trip to the newly constructed Namib Dune Cabins.

Participants meet at the Namib Desert Lodge in the afternoon. An experienced guide leads the group on the 7–10 km hike and passes on his knowledge of the flora, fauna and geology of the Namib. The Namib Dune Cabins are situated west of Namib Desert Lodge on a dune - sheerest nature as far as the eye can see!

Seven unpretentious log cabins are equipped with two beds each and offer grand vistas of the desert landscape. The beds can be pulled through the wide front door onto the wooden deck outside. Each cabin has its own shower and toilet. Water is heated with solar power.

The community log cabin with large panoramic windows is the place to watch the sun go down and spend a pleasant evening together. There is no electricity as to avoid light pollution. Candles and lanterns create a cosy atmosphere, and catering is excellent. Then the highlight of the trip: sleeping in the open under the stars, far from the sounds and lights of civilisation, in total peace and quiet, in harmony with nature. The next morning an invigorating cup of coffee and snacks are served before hiking back to Namib Desert Lodge where a big breakfast is waiting for the early risers.

Gondwana Namib Park offers the opportunity to experience two sides of the Namib: to the east, vast plains extend to the foot of distant mountains, whereas to the west rows and rows of dunes are lined up all the way to the horizon. In fact there is even a third side to the oldest desert on earth because the reddish sand covers brown sandstone – the fossilised dunes of a primeval Namib which in some places strikingly reveal themselves. Gondwana Namib Park borders on the 10 km buffer zone of the Namib Sand Sea which was declared a World Heritage site in June this year.

The Namib Dune Cabins will be opened for guests on 1 November this year. Bookings for this hiking experience and a night spent in the Namib Dune Cabins can be made immediately. The package is available subject to booking the night prior to the hike at Namib Desert Lodge. The same rates as for Namib Desert Lodge apply.

Activities include:
•Guided Birding & Fishing trips
•Photographic Safaris
•Boat Hire (from small speed boats to large pontoons for the whole family)
•Day and overnight trips to Chobe National Park, Victoria Falls and various Caprivi Game Parks

Sir Osis of the River, our largest pontoon boat (max 25 people) is also recommended, and these cruises are tailor-made to suit individual requirements.
Bird watching and photography are all year round pursuits, and a large breeding colony of carmine bee-eaters can be viewed from the river, from mid-August to late November. Between April and December, the magnificent African skimmers are a familiar sight, and a leisurely boat cruise will reveal the ever-present fish eagle, herons, kingfishers and coppery tailed coucals.
Kalizo has the best tiger and bream fishing on the river! The lodge's well-equipped boats, with rods and fishing tackle, not to mention their experienced guides, will accompany their guests to the best fishing locations on the river.
