Dear Friends and esteemed Guests!

Finally after having a couple of days off, we were able to sit down, and extend the history of Wabi Lodge from 2011 until 2014 which will go in print middle of 2015. Everything that was big, what happened in these 3 years was added and some new topics are also to be seen.

First, 2013 was a bad year, having only 202 mm of rain, Wabi, like lots of other game and life stock farmers experienced the 2nd worse rain season, and therefore a very bad drought, where we ended up with at least 1.2 Mill N$ fodder expenses. The dam did not get any rain water flow, but luckily we only had to pump water into the basin for the Hippos in the last 3 months of the drought. After a huge bush fire we came in from the north in September 2013, jumping and burning the fence and the rest of the grass that was left. Some Kudus infected with rabies, entered the Farm and infected our until then healthy population, which ended in the death of at least 100 animals, fortunately it is over now.

In early 2014, all animals gave us a big thank you to for all the feed and lick, having had the 2nd best rain season, with over 700 mm. 2 Hippo calf were born and we never thought that our injured Hippo female would ever get pregnant, but here she suggested otherwise. All other animals of course, like Giraffe, Zebras, Gnus and Antelopes also had very good off-spring. The dam filled up to a size of approx.  500 meter span and the overflow was running for at least 4 weeks.

In July 2014, we built our own solar power plant, a photovoltaic 32.4 kWp PV plant, with 216 solar modules and 54 kW Island Inverters. Still needing the Generator too often for back up, we decided in October to order an upgrade with another 80 solar modules. This was the biggest financial investment since the Lodge was built in 1987.

During October 2014 we finally installed a repeater on top of the Lodge, which gives the clients the ability to use their cell phones at least in the vicinity of the reception in the Lodge, because neither MTC nor Telecom had any intentions to think about a cell tower in our corner of Namibia.

Now beginning of 2015 it seems, as if Namibia is hit by another, even worse drought, so we hope with prayers, that we still will get enough water to fill the dam, feeding is already a must. Please support us with good thoughts.

We hope we are not boring you, the two beauties in  the attachment are seen quite often in the lat couple of months. This pic was taken February 12, 10.00 am on the landingstrip.

If you need a translation into German please do not hesitate to ask for it, Thank you for not being bored.

Kind regards

Mark and Christine Egger
