Namibia: Dune Star Camp: a walk through time at new Namib camp

A short guided hike through the Namib, a picturesque dune camp. Then, a tasty dinner and a night spent under the stars... Dune Star Camp in Gondwana Namib Park opened on 8 December 2013 and the first guests were thrilled. Dune Star ensures an extraordinary experience, tailored to a small group.

The first guests were led to Dune Star Camp by expert guide Chantelle Bosch. “There are several routes from Namib Desert Lodge to the new camp,” she says. “Whether we take a short one or a longer one depends on how fit the guests are and also on the late afternoon temperatures, of course.”

The nine cabins of Dune Star are situated in a spectacular section of the Namib Desert in prime positions on the sand dunes. Solar-powered and with a minimal eco-footprint the structures, although providing protection from the elements, can be easily dismantled and removed, leaving no trace in the sensitive environment.

Ancient fossilised dunes act as a backdrop and sienna sand-ripples extend onto grassy plains, a green vein of camelthorn trees and the purple-blue Naukluft Mountains in the distance. The central cabin, ideal for dining and socialising, is positioned on the lip of a dune and is edged by a sprawling deck overlooking the sublime scenery.

After hot showers, sundowners and an appetizing fire-cooked meal, the desert night, adorned with a generous splash of stars, beckons. Guests have the option of rolling their beds out onto their decks for a sound sleep permeated by Namib blessings and deep peace.

Concordantly the first guests agreed: More than its exceptional pristine desert landscape, Dune Star provides an unrivalled outdoor experience, far from the bustle of civilization.

Bookings for this hiking experience and a night spent in the Dune Star Camp can be made immediately. The package is available subject to booking the night prior to the hike at Namib Desert Lodge. The same rates as for Namib Desert Lodge apply.
