Gross Barmen Resort has reopened after receiving a facelift of more than N$ 200 million over three years. Resort has been revamped in the style of ancient Greece.
Originally known as Otjikango Otjinene - meaning large fountain in otjiHerero - Gross Barmen is built on the site of an early Rhenish mission, which was established in 1844 by two missionaries Heinrich Kleinschmidt and Carl Hugo Hahn.
Gross Barmen was officially opened on Tuesday by President Hifikepunye Pohamba. The resort now boasts of 47 rooms - 97 beds including five VIP chalets. It also caters for the Muslim community.
The facility also has a health spa, outside and inside thermal pools, camping sites and conference facilities, restaurants, bars and a retail shop.
The government provided N$220 million for the refurbishment of the Gross Barmen Resort.
President Hifikepunye Pohamba, who officially opened the resort on Wednesday, said it was a pleasure for him to visit a beautiful facility, which is one of the country's natural treasures.
The evergreen palm trees, green lawns, a bird paradise, and its beautiful fauna and flora are some of the many attractions at the resort.
It has tennis courts, a children's playground and many pleasant walkways. It also includes facilities for spa and wellness, fitness, recreation, and leisure which makes it ideal for visitors of all ages.
One of the main attractions at the resort is the health and hydro/medical spa centre, featuring thermal springs and providing a full range of treatments, massages, and health activities for relaxation.
Additional attractions include sports facilities - a fully equipped gym, playground, game room, putt-putt course, and water theme park with water slides with a pleasant lukewarm temperature for children.
The accommodation options at Gross Barmen include recently refurbished family and bush chalet and camping sites.

NWR managing director Zelna Hengari said the resort was closed on 20 December 2010 for renovations, which cost the government about N$200 million.
She also said the resort had to be refurbished since it was no longer in good shape.
