The FNB Desert Dash takes place on 12 and 13 December this year. Since its humble beginnings in 2005 when 44 riders entered the inaugural event, the extreme endurance race has grown by leaps and bounds and this year will see 546 riders participating.
At the official launch on Tuesday, the main sponsor, FNB Namibia announced a sponsorship of 375,000 N$ for the event, with spokesman Dixon Norval saying they were proud to be associated with the event.
"FNB Namibia is proud to be associated with the Desert Dash, which has now become one of the most sought after cycling competitions in the world. Wherever you go in the cycling fraternity, people talk about the FNB Desert Dash," he said.
This year's event will see riders covering 370 km from Windhoek to Swakopmund. Solo riders, two-man and four-man teams will leave Windhoek on Friday, December 12, at 15h00 and will take the road over the Kupferberg Pass and the Khomas Hochland and through the Namib desert before finishing in Swakopmund, next to the aquarium, the next day.
